Pulled the wheel and fender liner to replace the inoperable stock motorized antenna. I bought a $34 metra power antenna from Amazon and began the process.

I could talk about the modification to the the stock bezel and how I twisted the metal strap to fab the lower bracket but I hit a wall with the electrical.

The antenna was tested with a motorcycle battery, so I know it works, so scratch that.

What's funny is there are three wires ultimately going to the stock antenna motor, so my plan was to tap them and install to the metra. But I only got a faint buzz and no operation. So I checked the voltage and am only getting 10.5 to 11 volts. Could that be the problem? (Obviously) but how to correct?

I guess I could ghetto-rig a momentary rocker in the cab... For curiosity sake, can anyone explain why there are 6 wires in the harness? Why is it so hard to find a diagram. I am guessing it has something to do with a separate relay... Why is this so complicated?

Secondly, I read on slee's faq that a 1992 Toyota pickup antenna is a close match. That does not seem to show up in the search on this forum. Why is that and does anyone have a part number or resource? Thinking of scrapping the motorized antenna all together.

There is a FSM available on tlcfaq website, antenna wiring should be same through all years. It probably has 6 wires because it has On/off, up, and down. Did you bench test the old motor to see if it is the problem, or did it stop working because something on the vehicle side? A shorter, fixed antenna would be a good mod.

Ever get this running? I'm going down the same path and would love any tips on mounting and electrical hookup. Thanks!

I probably posted these two Toyota #'s elsewhere...maybe not :D

Got these from Onur aka beno about a year ago (sorry can't remember if it came from a Taco, Tundra or FJC). It worked fine, as a fixed antenna replacement for the OEM, until I snapped it off somewhere in South Park Death Valley last November.

Fixed antenna (black): 86309-0C020
Base: 86300-0C010

Now, having said all that the best performing antenna, relative to FM signal pull in power/efficiency, was the OEM retractable/motorized antenna in the OEM location. For whatever reason, I suspect the various adapters and/or different coax or coax length, I've experienced diminished FM antenna performance with all the antennas I've tried other than the OEM and OEM location including my latest brainfart creation of adding the OEM motorized to the DS fender (TJM dorkel eliminates using the OEM antenna location). Again, I suspect the coax extension cable and/or the coax adapters are to blame.

YMMV.

So what you're saying is my dream of replacing the factory antenna with a firestik is a pipe dream.

I'm glad you shared this.

Hard to believe it could actually get worse than the factory antenna. I think it gets the worst reception of any car I've ever had.

X2....am going to tackle this project this spring. Not looking forward to it!
