I have searched the threads and my sunroof is leaking and the gasket needs to be replaced. Read about replacing the cables and have tried to reprogram/reinitialize. When I push the buttons for the sunroof it makes a click but doesn't try and open. My question is this, does the motor go bad? From what I have read doesn't seem like that is usually the case.

I am thinking about just sealing the sunroof with some black rtv or silicon caulk since I am not really interested in spending a lot of money on the sunroof.

Thanks

ALL SUNROOFS LEAK A LITTLE. This is by design. They are not water-tight.

As I said the last time you asked about this, the water that gets in pools in the channels on the sides, then drains out, if the drains are clear. If the drains are not clear, the water fills the channels and overflows into the interior.

Pull the black plastic trim covers from the interior side of the sliding panel, remove the 4 bolts holding the panel on, and put the panel aside. This will give you access to the drains. Clean the drains (many posts here on how to do this). You don't have to seal it up. Sealing it will work until the seal breaks down and you will have water inside again. Fix it right the first time and the problem will be gone.

Total cost for doing this is $0

I am really interested in the motor question. Roger on cleaning drain, done this on a couple of 4runners and Land Cruisers.

You can drop the motor from the overhead console with a few bolts. If the gear and drive cables are rusty there, it's toast. The motor isn't that big, it's not strong enough to spin the cables if they are rusted. Since at least one of your cables has been sitting in water, and won't move, that would be my guess. Just don't lose track of which direction and how much you move things if you operate the switches with the motor out, it's a pain to get it indexed back up again.
