Well I finally decided to get going on installing my stereo equipment in my cruiser. I hesitated for a while on this, not entirely sure if I wanted to put this stuff in my off roading/weekend driver, but after my recent trip to Katemcy, I decided that I needed some better tunes. Here's the eventual equipment list:
DECK: Pioneer DEH-6900UB
EQ: Zapco SP4-SL
AMP: ZAPCO DC650.6
Front speakers: Image Dynamics Chameleons CSX64 (Don't have yet)

Rear speakers: MTX 6.5” Component, 8000 series
Sub: OZ Audio Matrix 10”

I'm going to do my best to get the Chameleons in the front doors, which I know they are pretty deep speakers. The MTX 6.5's I plan on building little pods for them. While on the road attach them to the back wall facing forward, and then while camping, unhook them and throw them on top of the top tail gate. Time for some pics!

I just have to add this in. The coolest thing about that zapco amp, is its ability to hook up to a computer via USB and using the software it came with it, to control every feature digitally and each channel individually can be controlled. Also the signal from the indash eq, to the amplifier is balanced line at about 16V, so I'm not going to have to worry much about engine whine.

pretty sweet. i assume you saw my audio build thread. nice equipment there, those MTX components look like they pound. dunno how you will get the front's in, maybe check out my thread, I had to go with 2 MDF spacers and drilled a hole in the cardboard door trim

Thanks! Yea, I checked out your thread and I have to thank you for inspiring me even further into working on my install. I saw what you did with your front door speakers, and that's what I figure I would have to do.

Latest update. :)
My dog has to help out of course. :D

Some more pics.
Bottom pic has the sub I'm using in a box I had laying around. I plan on building a smaller box, and try to sink it into the side just below the amp. That's the plan for this weekend. Oh and putting in the front door speakers and building pods for the rear speakers.

While yer doing all that wiring work, you should pull the Uniden and hardwire the antenna so that it sits flush.

Yea, I thought about doing that, but so far it's been fine as is, so I'm going to leave it for now.

Looks good! I dunno what to do about a space-saving sub box either. Currently I just have, like you, some MDF thing in the back.

any bright ideas?

As I look at it, I have 3 options that I'm weighing.
1: where it is now, but build a shorter box, cut the panel, and push it back more, so that the front of the sub would be flush to the wheel.
2: go to the opposite side and do the same as mentioned above.
3: build it into my rear storage, like NLXTACY's plans

What have you been thinking?

Make sure that the connectors( which snap through small ho;es) for the beauty strip located above and outside by the window is water tight. I located my amp in the same location and fried it after a heavy rain.
Your install looks good.

I use the same sub as Sno bored. I have the 10" mounted in the same location. mrhustle23, I am sure your stuff will pound and looking forward to what you do to finish your project.

sno bored, does that mean the panel does not go back on? it must rattle like mad if it did.

hustle - Currently, i plan to wait it out wiht my current box until i build a drawer system. when i build a drawer system, I will figure out a way to build the sub into it so that can still put stuff on top. GL and keep this thread updated please :)

Good advice!!! I will definately do that. I would hate to see this amp fry. :crybaby: And thank you for the compliment!

I had a box made that is similar to the LDD box. The sub is a shallow fit sub.

Thanks! Hopefully I'll get it all done this weekend.

If I figure that I don't like the sub on the side, or if it sticks out too much, then I'll use this current box until I build the rear storage and just build it in. I'd rather not have it there, just so I can have more storage space... I'll have more updates by this weekend, hopefully with a complete system!

My panel fit back on no problem. No rattles inside of the truck, I put a bunch of dynamat inside the area. On the outside of my truck it sounds like a blown speaker. I think my flender flare rattles.

Good job so far.

x2 on leaks from above. There are a couple ways to protect electrical components from moisture.
Because I also have my inverter mounted in the panel, I don't trust my best effort sealing the moulding/windows so I also use a strip of rubber barrier (scraps I had ... you could use something similar to what is inside the door panels) sealed to the back of the wood mounting panel and run up to the area below the window sealed with double sided tape (I have it apart I'll try to get a pic)

With an amp that big you will be hard pressed to fit a sub in the remaing space. My first upgrade used a shallow 8" in the factory spot. Sounded good (but not enough punch at hwy speeds) and fit behind the panel

IMO the best route is a storage unit/sub housing since it can be customized to suit your specific needs without using up too much space (my son is using a dedicated sub box in his truck and hates how much space it uses compared to mine)
