Another data point for starter contacts: 1997 LX450, 70k mi, mostly city driving (frequent starts). Having no problems with my starter, I ordered starter contacts / plunger from CDan about 2 weeks ago as PM, but haven't had time to do the rebuild yet. This morning I had my first turn-the-key-but-no-starter-engagement, then I tried again and it started fine.

If I can draw any conclusions for PM from my experience, it would be this: my truck is 8 years old and had 70k mi. on it when this happened. To be safe, if my driving pattern remains fairly constant, I will replace starter contacts / plunger every 7 years / 60k mi. from now on. Note that this applies to a vehicle with the 2kW starter and one used primarily for city driving (frequent starts).

My LX is of similar age and mileage. I replaced the contacts and plunger last year as PM. Contacts looked like they could have gone another 75K. Post up a pic of your contacts, once you get into it.

Thanks for the info- an important question though is what are your driving patterns like? Do you do a lot of city driving / short trips / frequent starts? Will post more info when I get it, although I may just get a new starter since it should be covered by my remaining 2 months of Lexus CPO Warranty and keep my CDan parts as backups.

Well, I've only owned it for a year and a half, and don't know the previous driving pattern. It was a low mileage vehicle, but really no way to tell how the miles got on there. From the looks of the starter contacts, they drove it off the lot and ran it for 67 k, then turned it off and parked it for 6 years :D.

I'll see if I can post a pic of the contacts later, if you think it would be of any value to your thread.

Just an FYI in case anyone wants to see my worn starter contacts- Lexus decided to give me a new starter and I agreed as part of my CPO warranty, so it looks like I won't be able to get those old contacts. :( I made sure it was the 2kW!

I'm new to this site and while I have yet to read the thousands of threads, I thought someone might be able to help with a FJ-80 1997 starter problem. Recently starts do not happen on first try...mostly 2nd or third try, sometimes 4th or even 5th turn...always starts, but not on first try anymore. Replaced battery, dealer suspects starter/solenoid in 9 of 10 cases to solve problem... anyone experience similar problem and solve it? also what is difference between 2.0 amd 2.2 KW starter, TOYOTA parts guy said either would work, just needed to be matched with comparable solenoid???

98% probability that your starter merely needs new contacts, which means remove it, open it on the bench and 15 minutes later put it back in the truck. If you can't do it, find an honest mechanic that would charge you for the hour of labor and use Toyota contacts. Get the correct contacts by reading your part number off the starter - lean in with a flashlight and you'll see the label. Don't order with this part number and you'll likely get the wrong ones. Cdan here on the list can get them to you at best price.

I have had my 1996 4.5 for nearly a year now, starter refused to turn a few times, but got slightly worse the last 6 weeks, so changed the contacts the other week, been ok since.

I have a contact set for a 14kw starter motor the part numbers are 28226-74070 and 28226-64370 I was unsure what starter I had when ordering, so ordered both, apparently here in the UK we have the so called cold start starter motor, which is 20kw these parts are for a 1996 4.5 petrol land cruiser but may fit other starters.
The shipping costs to the USA from England will be $4 and will take 3 to 5 days via airmail, or if within England it will be £1 if anyone is interested and will pay the shipping, I will send for free!!!!! now that can't be bad....lol I accept paypal if that makes it easier...kind regards Mick.

Wow, nice of you, Mick.

On my 97 FZJ80, I changed the starter contacts/plunger at 68k miles. Mixed highway/city driving.
