I know this stuff has been covered, and I apologize for my ignorance ahead of time. I’m trying to get a little perspective on the situation.

I purchased this 2000 a couple weeks ago from another member, after saving and wanting a Cruiser for a long time. Checked it out during the purchase and saw surface rust but nothing seemed out of the ordinary for a mid Atlantic vehicle. I guess I missed checking this section of the frame.

My abs, vacuum, trac off lights came on while driving down the road for a couple minutes, no CEL or trouble shooting codes logged. Thinking maybe an abs or wheel sensor I went to inspect the rear wheels.

I noticed this section of the frame had some rust build up, checked it out, a big chunk came off, and there are some pretty sizable loose flakes on the interior. Definitley seems worse on the inside.

I’m guessing the best option is to get a body shop to cut out the section and weld in a new one? How critical do you guys think that is right now? I know it’s tough to estimate but what would I even be looking at price wise for something like that?

Better options?

Funds are limited after dropping a bunch of savings on the truck. I want it to last as long as possible so I am trying to figure out the next things I’ll need to take care of.

Thanks for any help.

doesn't look that bad to me. i would get some Fluid Film and one of their snorkels. then i would buff as much as i could and coat it inside and out.

Thanks, that’s good to hear. I know rust is the bane of existence around here and I really thought I had thoroughly checked it out.

I’ll be getting some fluid film and do as you suggested, thanks again.

get that flex snorkel thingy that attaches to the spray can and run it up into the upper tailgate through the drain holes.

The easiest way to get the entire upper hatch is to just pop off the license plate light covers. Or if you really want to go crazy like I did, remove the plastic cover on the inside and you have access to the inner sides of the upper tailgate.

yeah looks like that snorkel thing sprays 360 too, should make it easier spraying the inside, thanks for the tip.
