any idea on the cause? water?

IT HAPPENED ON THE STREET!!! you can not blame good OLE FATIGUE, on any one specific trail, unless that is absolutely the ONLY trail you ever go on. And why are you running your air-locker on the street anyway.

Sounds like there is a BONE-HEAD somwhere here?

FESS UP, whats the real story.

No bone. Was not locked tard. Don, water may have been an issue but the diff oil was clean with a tiny bit of water and no signs of rust so I say water was not the cause. There was also no metal in the oil so it wasn't making metal for any time just went BAM as I shifted into 4th gear. Popped the tranny outa gear but was still driveable. It did not like the 1/2 mile back to house but it made it without full lock up which was really quite amazing once I looked inside. The pinion for the 3rd spider was sticking out about 1/2 inch and wacking the pinion every time around. Lots of misc. chips on ring gear and the driver side adjuster nut was backed all the way out and it just pushed the lock tab as it unscrewed. I thought the bearing but no signs of waste material in oil so who knows.
Anyone got a dana 60 or 14 bolt they don't want ?
I think the bearing backed off letting the ring gear move away from pinion which caused the pinion to snap off pieces of ring gear which entered arb and caused BSAM. I'll have it fixed by nightfall. Not happy about runnin my spare third as it is coarse spline but it does have a brand new arb in it so here goes nothin. I always told myself I would burn thru all my spares before I built an axle for the rear so now I'm one step closer. I imagine the coarse spline unit will break sooner or later. I'm thinkin bout gettin a quote from Freshman to have him build me a narrowed/offset, 6 lug, full float dana 60 axle with disc brakes, arb, and custom chromo shafts. Then I'll have the drive line guy put 1350 ends on and I'll make a flange to go to t-case, prolly close to 4 or 5 K for the axle I'm thinkin.
Also thinkin a set of cruiser third bearings needs to go in the parts box.

sounds like something loosened up for sure. Don't think I'd want to wheel with ya knowin "the course spline unit will break sooner or later"

Don,
You can still wheel with him, just make sure you keep him behind you, hide all your tools, and claim to have absolutely NO KNOWLEDGE of how to fix it, and you will be AOK.

Jon,
There's still a BONE-HEAD in here somewhere, and you know I am gonna find it.

Who put the ARB in, and forgot to set the lock on the adjuster.

You can get a built rear with ALL the goodies for under 3K. Also get a 70 or 14bolt if you can, cheeper to build, no need to bore out spindles for your 40spline shafts. PNP has lots of axles all you need is a housing. $70

I'll call you to go over order. Remeber it has to be 58" wms to wms and 6 lug full float, offset to pass. , spring over, 86 chevy k5 blazer brakes, or the little metric ones, need to be 4.11 with arb or detroit, and yes I'd like Jacks shafts with 40 spline flanges , get started. James has a dana 70 doner axle at his house.

John, aren't you SO? and what size tires? not to highjack

nevermind the SO question :D

37's Don and you don't ever wait for me anyhow.
Roger, sure will. Looks like the cross shaft broke, and when the broken end sticking out came around to pinion it went thru but forced the entire carrier to driver side blowing out all the threads in the bearing main cap thus letting adjuster and bearing blow out as well. I guess the third member is dead fully but the arb looks like it may have survived but needs new housing and cross shaft.

"37's Don and you don't ever wait for me anyhow." only cuz you're on a different schedule John:D

Bahahahaha... two classic lines in this post!

'You can polish and polish a turd, but in the end its still a turd '

'only cuz you're on a different schedule John ' (ok, that is freaking funny Don.)

John, don't let these guys pick on you because your truck grenaded... after all, if they start with you, they'll move right over and start picking on Ross.

Ross, or Roger, or Dion, or Michael, or Dave.......
Michael, at least my rig attended the event ?????
Don, you are the one on the different schedule, retired schedule that is.

Run your back up coarse until the new parts come available and stay off the skinny peddle.
Then sell the coarse spline to help off set the new parts. Carry a nopen 3rd as a spare or weld it.

We only pick on people we like and we wish we were on Don's Schedule. Don is it to hot to work in the yard yet?

I have a shade tree, a little garden to watch the veggies grow and my pet chickens to keep me entertained:D Drinking lots of water.
This week is rebuild the Ramsey winch week (or month since it's my schedule). All new seals are ordered.
