Is the new Toyota filter really crap or is it just not as good as the old one? What's so bad about it? C-Dan stated in a seperate post that it's just as good as any aftermarket filter, do you agree?

to me it is a set back in techonolgy, We had a really High tech sythenic material that filters really well coming out of japan and then they go back ward into a paper element in a small can comeing from Thailand. All so they can make it cheaper to do a oil change and make a buck. Not a smart move for toyota in my mind, but I am not a bean counter either. later robbie

Sorry, I have to chime in. Toyota has the reputation and perception of high quality whether its a vehicle/part in mass production or a part in service.

The approved drawing for the part coming out of one location, Toyota Motor Corp (TMC) Aichi, Japan. The material that goes into the production of the part needs to meet a certain design spec.

Now, with that said if a supplier wants to locate a part for production in another country, then they have to get final approval and sign off from TMC.
From expereience the cost to produce a part in Thailand is very cheap because of labor, US hourly = $15/hr and TH hourly = $0.75/hr.

Finally, the materials that go into a part is relative to the design spec of the car. Example, an engines that has higher rev's will require a higher tolerances.

My 2 cents,
JK

I'm assuming the 40 filters are the same. I prefer Wix.
On the left is the "new" small filter. Middle original Toy filter from Japan and Right is the mega Wix filter, extra capacity. ;)

Well JK: while i have the tendency to agree with your statements in part. The filters we are talking about have come out of Japan(for the 1FZ) up till the recent replacement of the YZZ## part numbers. While it may be of high quailty, it may not be the filters we have grown acustom to a higher quailty product coming out of japan, then to have a filter that comes from thailand that is cheaper and goes back to paper as a filteration media is a money decision. this filter has less media square inches then the bigger filter(both paper), and is a multi fit type that is used in many models of engines(with varring oil pressure spec's). It was done mostly as a cost saving for the company, to make more money. Some times when the profit margins are higher and it mets a minimum spec then it fly's, toyota is no exception to the rule here. The filter that these paper YZZ## have replaced is not superior to but inferior to the 20004 and related filters. If it were me, I would look for a after market filter with better specs and pay the price then put a paper element in any of my personal engines. later robbie

I run WIX on all my Cruisers(except for the 45LV which uses the canister element, fo rthat I use Toyota)

Robbie,
The more detail that you provided gives me better understanding of your case. I am not fully versed on the 1FZ and was not aware of a capacity change.
And I think we both agree that a better filter (smaller micron filteration) is always desired over stock when available.

Thanks,
Jim

Yes better filtration with multiflow capabilities with out plugging is the goal for best engine life. I did beleive the Synthetic media of the 20004 series of filters is far superior to the paper element of the new YZZ## filters. I am sure Dan has read this thread, he could tell us as to why they have stop or his opinion as to why we do not get the better filters. But I think I am spot on as to why. Later robbie
