The LC has always been my dream car ever since growing up in the middle east and dune bashing. Now this dream is within arms reach, but my budget is constraining. This is what I'm considering:

2000 LX470 @ $7000

Rusty chassis, cracked windshield, bypassed ride height control, CD player not working, original clean title, 265k miles, timing belt changed at 180k. interior is great, couple rust spots on the body.

Option #2 GX460 2005 @$7000
255k miles Original clean title, Touch screen not working so the center console is useless. Timing belt changed a year ago. not too much rust. Is unfortunately not a land cruiser so I'm wondering if the suspension and ride quality feels the same.

Any advice?

The rust will just break your heart, over and over. Not worth it on a dream car IMO, especially if you plan to mod it up. Some rust may be unavoidable given budget and locale, it happens.

The GX is a solid platform too—probably the only thing that'll let you know if it's right for you is to go test drive one. And maybe ask around in the GX forum here also, they should set you straight on any advantages or disadvantages.

Thanks! Yeah my biggest concern was definitely the chassis rust. I also do enjoy the ride quality of the LX and don't know if the bypassed suspension will be the same. And the gx probably isn't as soft of a ride as the lx

depending on where you are at in the world, you can also post up on the FB forums too and state what you are looking for. Never know what might float through your inbox. you can also check places like cargurus. That's actually where I found mine.

For context, my 2000 LC was in the exact same condition and had 20k (242k) less on miles when I got it and I paid $4500 for it. I wouldn’t go $7k on that at all, and rust doesn’t scare me one bit.

That sounds like a steal. And these prices are kinda scary haha upwards of 13k on average

GX is a Land Crusier too! It is LC Prado. Also GX are lighter and had 5 spd transmission (vs. 4 speed in the 02 and earlier LX) so they are a bit more fuel efficient and more responsive.
Go with the newest, best maintained cruiser in you budget!

GX is more nimble, faster, better handing. Better front suspension with more potential.

LX is more planted and solid driving, slower, more interior room and probably more comfortable in many ways. My brother got a GX460 and GX470.

Can’t go wrong with either one.

Just buy one with little to no rust. The ones you posted are BAD.

GX is a better road car, LX/LC are better off road

If you do go GX, take the time to find one without touch screen and nav. There are plenty.

Hard pass on that LX. I know the market has changed since I bought my LC in 2018, but $7k is too much for a rusty rig with a busted windshield and apparent broken AHC.

GX are solid as well and very capable in their own right. As said above, they are a LC Prado and have lots of aftermarket support. Unless you need the space of a LC/LX, a non-nav GX is a solid choice for your money.

Thank you guys for your feedback, it's definitely been helpful, it looks like my dreams might have to be put on hold for a little. I always had a negative stigma toward the Prado because it's ALMOST a LC but not quite, but I have come to appreciate it much more.

GX is a Land Crusier too! It is LC Prado.
Lmao, then a 4runner is a Land Cruiser too, right? Given GX = 4Runner = Prado = 120/150 series. They are not Land Cruisers.

Hey man, I don't make the rules! Mr. T sells it as an LC Prado elsewhere! 4Runner has enough differences in suspension and running gear that I think it is a different beast than Prado/GX.
Still - good to have differing opinions, makes this an interesting and useful place!

The GX is based on the Toyota Landcruiser Prado. My experience with the 120 series Prado is that it's bl@@dy good offroad, a capable driver would get it to most places you'd get a hunjy to.

The first Gen GX that OP is considering has the same engine, transmission, t-case, axles, and frame (and depending on 4runner trim level, the same suspension) as the 4Runner. The GX/Prado is a 4Runner with a different body. The LX is a Land Cruiser with different features but the same bones. The GX, Prado, and 4Runner were all built in the same facility (Tahara/Hamura) because they are functionally the same. None were built in the same facility as the LX/Land Cruiser (Yoshiwara), because they are not Land Cruisers.

Well, looks like I was mistaken, thanks for the info!

What area are you located in. I'm putting my 98 LC up for sale soon in Madison WI. No rust(truck is treated and Madison doesn't use salt). Newer tires. Rebuilt brake booster. Have seat covers for front seats about to go in. I can pm you details if your nearby.

I would buy GX no questions asked if I was given only these two choices. I would not sleep well every night if I had an LX 470 with this rust on the undercarriage, it looks awful. Also, the muffler was changed at some point as it does not look original and this one is on the way out soon.

Does anyone know much about Sequoias and how they stack up against the LC, Prado and 4runner lineup?

You cannot hate yourself enough to buy that rusty ride. It is not just the rust creating holes to worry about. Every single time you go to loosen any bolt it will either be frozen solid or the edges of the bolt will round off. Southern car with no rust and way more miles would be way easier to address than something that rusty with half as many miles. Just don't do it to yourself.
