Tour geology of Valles Caldera

Take a trip through time to the age of active volcanoes during a geology tour along the north rim of the Valles Caldera National Preserve on Oct. 6.

The all-day tour will be led by local geologist Kirt Kempter, who conducted fieldwork and mapping for the U.S. Geologic Survey in the Jemez Mountains. The tour takes participants up Chicoma Peak for views of the Rio Grande Rift, Pajarito Plateau and Cerro Pedernal. The tour is a look at the geologic history of the caldera dating back 1.2 million years.

Reservations are required, and participation is limited to 35 people. Lunch is provided. The tour is a fundraiser for Caldera Action, a nonprofit organization that took over the work of the Valles Caldera Coalition. The cost is $50 before Friday and $75 thereafter.

This will happen when some of the club will be at Moab but those folks that don't go might want to check this out.

Thanks for posting Vince. Keep them coming until they quit due to snow. Too bad many of us will be in Moab that weekend.

Yep - even next summer...

I agree with Graham - I'd be there if it wasn't for Moab.

But, Moab takes priority. We should be wheeling (or gassing up and grabbing breakfast burritos in preparation for wheeling) two weeks from right now.
