Just in time for gas to go back up!
I have driven both and like both. Both are completely different animals but I like both. I know that a more comparable comparison thread would be 4th gen 4Runner vs. 470 and 100 vs. Seq. Problem is, I have never felt comfortable in the 4Runner. I just do not feel at home in one. I do, however, feel better and have better sight lines in the taller bodied GX. As for the 100 series, I just plain do not like them. For me, the Cruiser line ended at the 60 but my wife has this thing with putting our 16 month old in an older truck on a daily basis.
What I want to: something to be an only vehicle and daily driver, reliable, room for aforementioned daughter with wife and Beagle, and take me through greens and blues at the local ORV park and take the family and I down fire roads to camp and fish, etc... Both easily accomplished by either. Shooting for 33s. Car camping really.
Pros: What the GX has going for it is the aftermarket for suspension. Armor and bumpers are kind of slim pickings but with the wheeling I have in mind, not much is needed. What the Seq has going for it is related to its size. Although it is more room than I actually need, there is enough room to sleep inside which is a comforting thought for my wife after a bear in the middle of the night tent encounter. Part time 4wd also sees to allow the Seq, even with the larger size, to deliver better mileage. Can easily carry anything I could ever throw at it.
Cons: What the GX has going against it is finding a navigation free truck is difficult and for the same amount of money as a similar yeared Seq. Mileage is worse. Both have secondary air injection issues (right?). The Seq is bigger and very limited in terms of what can be done to it (again, not much is really needed). The GX has a better interior but also, more stuff to go wrong.
I have zero idea as to which way to go. $16k can get me a dealer maintained GX with around 100k miles or a lower mileage, year or two newer, Seq. I do not see many of either off road. People who have either love them.
