The reason that 60s had 3.70s and 62s went to 4.11s is the transfer case and transmission gearing differences. Apples and oranges in this case to compare the two. If you haven't driven a 3FE powered 62 with 4.88s and 33s I don't see how you can conjecture that the setup would be terrible for road usage. Out of curiousity, what is the redline for your diesel? The stock 3FE is 4500 rpm and makes its best power above 2200 rpm. As I stated earlier, my truck with 33s and 4.88s, 70 mph is at 2500 rpm, right in the early part of the 3FE powerband.

On the 60 (turbo diesel with 5 speed) I have I run 33s, and the 4.11s are too high for my taste, so I'll put 3.73s in. This truck is mostly used for long distance expedition type travel, and with the 4.11s it just revs too high on the highway.
I think that 33s and 4.88s will be extremely low geared, certainly appropriate for rock crawling, but terrible for highway travel.
