Another 62 gearing question

The reason that 60s had 3.70s and 62s went to 4.11s is the transfer case and transmission gearing differences. Apples and oranges in this case to compare the two. If you haven't driven a 3FE powered 62 with 4.88s and 33s I don't see how you can conjecture that the setup would be terrible for road usage. Out of curiousity, what is the redline for your diesel? The stock 3FE is 4500 rpm and makes its best power above 2200 rpm. As I stated earlier, my truck with 33s and 4.88s, 70 mph is at 2500 rpm, right in the early part of the 3FE powerband.

I think this really depends on how the truck is used.
On the 60 (turbo diesel with 5 speed) I have I run 33s, and the 4.11s are too high for my taste, so I'll put 3.73s in. This truck is mostly used for long distance expedition type travel, and with the 4.11s it just revs too high on the highway.

I think that 33s and 4.88s will be extremely low geared, certainly appropriate for rock crawling, but terrible for highway travel.

You are certainly right, the transfer case gearing could make a difference, also the H55F-I don't know the differences in the ratios.
The redline for the diesel is 3400 rpm, and at 75mph the truck runs at around 2900 rpm, which is too high for the diesel in the long run. Therefore I concluded that with 4.88s it would be worse.

Moby, you also have impeccable taste in dogs, if that is your Golden in the avatar.

Yup, that's my golden, they're great dogs. He prefers my FJ-62 to all other cars. He'll jump into my cruiser but I have to "help" him into my Audi A4 wagon. :)

Well I got an unpleasant surprise this afternoon... the Precision Gears I was supposed to receive showed up as Genuine Gears, after calling it seems the warehouse coulnt find the Precisions and decided the GG substitute would be fine - WRONG! If I wanted Chinese junk I'd have ordered them in the first place. Now I have to wait until the new 4.88's show up from the other coast & return the GG sets.
