so my old dog Cruiser, Malumute/rough collie cross, is getting up there and he has been a faithful companion on my wheeling trips (up till the last couple years), traveling companion all over north america and just get bud to have around.
he has the coolest personallity i have seen in a dog for as long as i have been around dogs (52 years) and as the months pass i am seriously considering getting his sperm pulled and impregnate a collie bitch, his hips are just too far gone (i think) for him to finish the job.
ideas, suggestions, warnings appreciated.

the bitch in the picture was fixed at a puppy or they would have made a great mix.

I can't help you with the insemination part, but I would caution you to think about your priorities. It's understandable to want to carry on the traits that make your current dog special. But if you are expecting to effectively carry on that relationship, you will likely be disappointed.

In my experience, even among litter mates, each individual animal has a unique personality. Even if you bred your dog, the pups will have some similarities but will also be very different. IMO, when replacing a lost companion, you should always treat the new pet as a new relationship. Expecting him or her to fill the void isn't fair to either of you.

Best of luck with whatever you decide.

I can't help but agree with both the desire and the explanation. No help here...

i do realize that personality comes from experience, it would be nice to have a similar base to build from though.
Cruiser, even as a very little puppy (he was taken away from his mother at 5 weeks by the pet shop), had this unique personality. tough little bugger although dependant. right from day 1 it seemed he wanted to always be within sight of me. if i sat and watched a movie he was right there within reach. if i stopped petting him then he would nudge my hand and give me the "i'm not done being petted" look that he still has today.
fast, strong, HUGE, smart. when ever i talked to him he would twist his head like he was seriously trying to understand what i was saying.
the last 12 years has just gone by too fast, i am not ready to let go so hence the question ...
