2004 LX lost all sound from the speakers over the weekend. Nothing out of the ordinary, truck was parked in a field with no rain or any other strange conditions. Speakers worked fine Friday and then nothing on Sunday. I checked the fuse box and there were no issues there. That is as far as I got and the truck had no sound Monday or Tuesday or this morning.

I just went out for gas a bit ago and after filling up I started the truck and heard a crackle from the speakers. Note that the radio was off. I say crackle, think of the sound when hooking up a guitar to a powered amp. That short burst of static or crackle. I decided to try the radio due to this sound and now everything is working fine! What the heck?

I turned the truck off and on a few times and the radio worked everything.

So now I'm thinking there is a short or bad connection some where. I plan on pulling the head unit and checking those connections this weekend.

Anything else I should look at? Anyone else ever have anything similar happen? I tried a few searches but didn't find anything that was a good fit to this issue.

Thank you for your though/advice.

Yeah I am thinking that as well. Hoping not but I know how that saying goes.

If you're going to go through the pain to R&R the headunit, might I suggest you find something like CRC 5103 quick dry contact cleaner. Just me being uncomfortable about amps under seats, but I would suspect amp connections before I addressed the headunit connections. No evidence to suggest one way or the other is more likely to be a problem area, I just think putting electronics under a seat was a dumb idea.
