New to me 2002 and I am baselining replacing all the bulbs etc. How the heck do I get this bulb to come on? Sorry this is kind of embarrassing but I can't figure out it's purpose.

That’s the “city light,” or position indicator. Illuminates on the first switch detent, along with the corner/turn markers.

In some markets (JDM, Euro, Middle East) this was a regulatory requirement — vehicles had to show white forward-facing “position lamps” in the headlight housing itself, separate from amber corner/turn markers. On U.S. trucks it still lights up, but is redundant.

It just barely illuminates, not designed to cast light forward.

Another quirk: you’ll notice at some point that the upper section of the tailgate-mounted taillights have no bulbs 🤣.

Mister Memo has a nice video showing how to remove the headlights to replace the bulb.

The alternative is to remove the battery.

The bulb is a 168. See 100 Series Land Cruiser bulbs for reference.

Put details of your vehicle in your signature so when asking questions others can more easily help.

I actually did not need to remove the battery but probably because the crossbar that is supposed to hold it in place is missing so I was able to push it out of the way to access the light. Yet another missing part I have to add to the list of this rebuild! I am also missing the oil filter access door among other things. Just the way it goes on an older rig.
