AMSOIL by-pass oil filter kit?...is this a good system or are there better available?

To start, I have searched and haven't really found the info I'm looking for.

I'd like to add a bypass oil filter system to my 1991 HDJ81 (1 HD-T Diesel engine) and have heard mixed reviews on the AMSOIL bypass system because it restricts oil flow to the full filter.

Does anyone have any experience with this system? Any thoughts?

Can anyone recommend a better system?

Thanks in advance!

-Jeff

PS. This is the system I'm refering to...

If you pick up any diesel magazine there will be a big advertisement for one. I just can't remember what it's called. I think FASS or something.

There are two Amsoil ways to go. #1, just a bypass filter. #2 a bypass engine oil filter combination. That double unit is the one youve heard negative views of. I have both and have never had problems with either. Just get a stand alone bypass filter and plumb it in and youll be set. Youre thoughts of doing this are correct and smart.

The FASS system isnt applicable to your truck. It is primarily a helper fuel pump, and filtration system. I dont suspect that you need a helper fuel pump.

Just because I am MORON:confused: why would you need this?

These divert a small portion of the oil flow headed to the regular oil fillter to go through a tighter micron filter thus cleaning out more debris over time. That is the very short version.

The amsoil bypass works extreamly well in the diesel applacation but with the gas applacation I was not impressed at all .
I am running a extended service oil filter and the amsoil oil ...they say a max of 15,000 on the filter but the oil is recomended to be dumped at 25,000 .
I just dump everything at 7,000 to be safe ...right now I have 5000 on the oil and filter and the oil is still a nice clear , a nice golden color ...the stuff works .
For the expence of the bypass I don't feel there is that much benifit on these trucks .
I do the oil sampling every 10k on my diesels ...I have a 4bt in a jeep and 6bt in a dodge and change my oil and filters 25 to 30 K ...thats usually once a year .
Just my 2 cents .

Greg,
Are you consuming any oil with Amsoil?
Are yoiu using there 5/30W Amsoil?
Thanks

Yes I am ...about 1 qt in 5000 miles . I would personal have concern with a dual filter system with the amount of oil pressure fluctuation that these motors have ...especialy @ idle ... a motor at idle only needs 6lbs of pressure ...some say less or more .
I think the pump may not be able to provide at idle and could cause some enternal damage over time .
Filters are usually designed in conjunction to specific motor spec's ...the filter will have a built in resistance and flow for that engine.
These motors are more like a motorcycle engines ... a finely tuned machine .
My big diesels are rude and crude but are built to take the abuse .
My cummins with the dual filter systems have allways held 42 psi @ idle ...thats great pressure .
I might be a little concerned if I put a dual filter system on my 80 .
I feel the cold morning rattle that some guys have is caused by the oil filter and put that type of system may not be compatable with the oil pump system on out 80's .
As I said thats just my opinion .

So its sounds that on a diesel, the reviews are positive? The bypass seems like a good system to me.

Absolutely. The normal engine oil filter filters to around 12-15 microns. Bypass oil filters often filter to less than 3.

The protection they afford your engine is matched by nothing else.
