How hard is it to take out the alternator? My lower mounting bolt is backing out and i need to get it back in before i do any damage to the belts.

Can't really speak for the 80's, but on the 60 it is rediculously easy. Loosen tension bolt, pull belt, remove mounting bolts and you're done. Also make sure you unhook electrical connections from the alternator before yanking it out.

Thanks magFJ60, got everything back in place. Damn it's tight in there.

Glad you got it done. I did new alternator and belts earlier this year and I'm glad the 60 has so much room to work in under the hood...seems every year there is less and less space to move around in.

similar problem...

I have a similar problem except that my pivot bolt worked itself completely loose and fell out. I have a 1983 BJ60 - 3B Diesel.

Does anyone know the specs on the pivot bolt for this alternator? Seems that all my local shops are bolt retarded.

Thanks for any info - I'm not driving until this little problem gets resolved ;)

Don't know the specs on the bolt but most likely you'll be able to find it on the Spector Off Road web site. Shipping is pretty $$, so you might as well order a few things to make it worth it. Or call Dan at the parts dept of American Toyota...you can find their info by doing a web search and I think there most likely is a link to both places on this forum if you want to stay with a toyota brand item. I would be inclinded to install a Grade 8 bolts with appropriate hardware etc....and a lock nut.

I'll check when I get home today. I had a problem with a few of my tensioning bolts and only one local place had the metric bolts that I needed ($7 a piece) so I ordered some from McMaster-Carr online and got 5 for about $12. I would suggest them over any place if you know exactly what you need.
