Hey guys I am about to take on the project of swapping brushes in my BJ42. I have done a search but can't find a 24v diagram of the alternator for a 3B.. Is there one out there or a How to? Got the brushes from the stealership for $12. Still in shock over how cheap they were...

Hey,
The brushes are under the cover that the battery/system feed line connects to. Un hook the big hot wire and remove the cover and remove the brush holder. You will need a soldering iron and a few minutes to unsolder and re-solder job. Do the brushes one at a time so you can guage the amount of brush retention in the holder. It's really easier than described!

Thanks man.. did the job this afternoon.. everything went smooth.. except my batteries were a little dead. charged them up and everything seems fine now. The filter light and brake light went off about 30sec after the new brushes were installed.. thanks for the help and it really is nice to do the job leaving the alternator in..

Update: I think one of the batteries is dead.. I just went out to start it and it lights up and nothing.. charge the batteries back up and it fires. They both have 12.5 volts but no crank till the charger has been on it for about a 30mins a piece..Time for new batteries?

Maybe, make sure you double check all the connections from ground through both batteries and check your battery level as well. Then give it a good charge, you may also want to check for discharge when the truck is shut off. Something may be draining your batteries? better to check before you spend the cash on new ones.

Cheers

woke up this morning and both batteries read 12.7.. tried the key and nothing.. A friend of mine has a battery tester so I'll wait for him to get home today and test them out.. I am thinking they are pouched but like freebie said better check..

Batteries are good... But still no start up.. just a click. How can something so easy go so crazy? I put the brushes, started the cruiser, my filter light and brake light went off, 29.6 volts across the bateries so everything was charging. Shut it off and went to restart it andd "click". Cleaned all the batery terminals and connections and still "click" So went it stops raining (if it ever does here in southwestern ontario) i will check more leads.. Its frustrating to find some touchy ground or something..

Check your firewall for wet components, ie starter relay, you may have water coming down from the windsheild seal causing the electrical problem??

Well after a tedious day of let downs.. The obvious thing I left till last and low and behold.. TAP THE STARTER and VROOM.. why do other things have to go wrong when you fix one thing?? hahaha anyway I guess I better look into a starter shortly.. Thanks to everyone..
