Hi everyone,
I had been chasing a charging issue in my 60 for a few weeks, and I had to change the alternator. I was lucky because I had a spare used OEM alternator in the basement that I bolted in. At this point , I am not sure how old the spare alternator is, so I want to be prepared in case somethings happens.
I looked on Rockauto and they have some rebuilt units for sale. The question is what is the correct alternator for a totally stock 1987 FJ60? They list a 2:00 and 10:00 position alternator. Were some 60's shipped with a 2:00 alternator and others with a 10:00 alternator?

Thanks,
Zack

I had a 7.3 diesel ford that had a place for 2 alternators. I never set it up that way because i wouldnt know if one was bad till they were both bad.

Should be the 10:00 position.
So now we have conflicting answers......
You are saying 10 and the thread said 2?

Why is this so confusing? I wonder why there are two different alternator choices when the 2f engine was the same?

Frame of reference... Looking from the front of vehicle, regulator is at 10, looking from hood hinge at alt, reg is at 2...
Clear as mud?
You do not want the regulator location interfering with the hose off waterpump.

I understand the frame of reference, but there are two different part numbers.

Hmm.
Went to the basement stash, exterior of the new alternator Denso box has #210-0126. The older alt (which was replaced) has the 'remanufactured for Toyota #27020-61071'
HTH?

Unfortunately Denso no longer makes/rebuilds the 60 alternator. On the Rockauto site they have ACDelco alternators, but the 10 and 2 are different part numbers (and different prices).

If you've studied the description on the rockauto site, the unit mfgr is Nippondenso. But rebranded delco
It's frustrating to look at the pics they have, and the reg is in the same location...2 belt pulley? 3 dollar diff in price? Weird.
Can you get it rebuilt local to you?

Look at someone like ToyotaPartsZone as that is where I got mine. On FJ60 looking from front of vehicle, standing in front of rad, it is at 10 o'clock. Look WAY back in my build thread and you should see part number. Also replace the regulator while you are at it.

All 81-87 USA 2F have the same internal regulated alternator.
For unknown reasons, many of the aftermarket catalogs list the Cressida alternator as also fitting the FJ60. It will fit in the bracket, but the VR & plug is clocked wrong and the VR ends up against the bypass hose.

Alternator pics from 84 and 85. All are the same with 10 o'clock positioning.

Here is an '85 2F:

Here is a line up of '84 alternators. They are the same.

Local rebuild could be done but both places want well over $100 to do it. It would seem to make more sense to order the rebuild from Rock.

I guess the simple answer is if you should look at the alternator from the front or rear? From the front it is 10 and from the rear its 2.

Think traditionally it is from the front of the vehicle when referencing in engine bay items. The 2 o'clock one is for the FJ62 and is mounted on the opposite side of the engine.

Read the link in post #2 ?
Clear as mud...
