Got my tranny to 203 adapter the other day...Went out to get it mocked up...the shaft was TOO LONG!
The 203 input bottoms out on the splines on the tranny, sooooo....gotta get a new output.

I saw your troubles in the 60 forum. You got a line on a new one yet???

not yet...I put a call in to Jim at Downey, but they were CLOSED!:bang:
He said that they might have one layin around. Not sure if the 700R shaft is what needs to be swapped or not.
Gotta find a tranny guy that wont kill me in price to do this.
AA has em too, but Downey ive found to be a bit cheaper overall, plus Jim posts here which gives him extra points from me.

This might be a dumb question, but can't you just cut the shaft? I know there are kits that do that with the NP231 when you do a "short shaft" kit. How much spline engagement does the 203 need? Axle shafts, t-case shafts and I'm sure most any other kind of splined shaft has been cut since they were first used. Now if the spline cut on the shaft doesn't got far enough back into the trans to allow the 203 to seat flush, then you are screwed.

Just a thought.

Yea i was thinkin the same thing cut 1 and 1/4 inches off the shaft and touch it up with a grinder then you should be good to go not sure if that how much you need to take but from what i seen of the pics that would be right just my 2 cents. what ever the lenght you need to cut you need to add about an 1/8 to a 1/4 inch to it just to make sure you have a little play room bud

Im thinking Im basically SUNK with trying to cut the shaft...The input on the 203 (that collar deal) is bottoming out at the base of the splines on the tranny shaft. Ill double check it, but Im reasonably certain that I just dont have the spline length. Ive read that people have machined the input, but never the amount that I need to go with it. Conversely, Ive also read of people cutting the shaft, however, Im getting the impression that Im just not that luck for that this time around.

So I went down to trans craft over by Costco to get an estimate and it was one of those deals..."well, while youre in there..." New HD sun gear (which Ive read about) and something with the valve body...one of the valves wearing out with the late model trannies and some american COMFORT SHIFT BS!
Long story short...all work said and done 320.00 for labor, and 242.00 in parts, NOT including the cost of the new shaft to be swapped. Seems a bit high...Then again, Im a cheap fawker anyway.

Ill have to check around a bit.

Nice, it seems you have the same kind of luck I do. If there is a more expensive or harder way to do something, then I will have to do it. Sorry.:hillbilly:

That actually doesn't seem like too bad of a price. Basically from what I have heard and seen, you are looking at anywhere from $1500-2500 to rebuild a 700r4/4l60e.

SOOOO, I went out and checked it again...
Its NOT bottoming out on the splines. I didnt check the depth inside of the 203 and its only 2 in. In theory, I could conceivably cut the required 1.5 in OFF of the shaft, but that would only leave me 1 in of spline. Beyond the splines on the tranny, there is 1 in of basically nothing till it tapers out, so I actually COULD do this.
Should I?
1 in of splines isnt a whole lot. I could maybe squeeze 1.25 if I had the cone on the 203 machined...
What do you think?

Seems kinda slim to me bro! It's hard to decide these things sometimes.....but is cheaper and easier the way you really want to go when you on the trail and those splines bomb on you????

Don't get me wrong, I like to slide my pennies when I can, but sometimes you gotta go with the :grinpimp:$$
 
I've got a makita cold saw that would cut right through that and the end product wouldn't even need to be touched up afterwards.

Totally agree with both of you.
Itd be a rippin shame to do all this, cut corners in the process and be really frickin sorry in the end. Do it right or not at all.
My goal is to have everything and begin the transplant next fall, so I have some time to keep amassing the parts necessary, but this was an unplanned expense...SURPRISE...cruiser mod with an unplanned expense...DUH.:bang:.

I contacted OrangeFJ45 to see what he thought of the price quoted since he worked in the transmission industry and does this crap full time...He said the labor hours were right, but the parts Im getting hosed on. Actually, by double the price. So Im gonna check to see if he will allow me to get my own parts. I doubt it, but it doesnt hurt to ask. However, he is gonna install a shaft that I bring in to him...

Not knowing anything about the two parts you are trying to connect...but how long is the spline "receiver"? If it only is a 1" mate than I'd say cut it. However if the mating "receiver" is longer in terms of spline length I'd say you'd want to do it right the first time.

Aren't these swaps/installs done all the time? I wonder why they would sell you the adapter without an "FYI". Or is it just more of the 4x4 aftermarket company BS we all seem to deal with on one level or another? :rolleyes:

As far as the swaps are concerned...well, theyre getting to be MORE common especially for those doing V8 swaps with automatics. From what I gather, the out put shafts ARE the determining factor as to how easily and how cheap this particular swap can be done for. If I had gone with a 700R tranny, I think that my life would have been much easier as then, all I would have had to do was cut the shaft. Since my tranny is a late(R) model transmission Im trading off ease for modern technology and perfomance.
I knew about the potential for this event, but I was hoping that I could avoid it. As it turns out, I would still pretty much NEED to do the upgrades to the tranny either way to ensure longevity/ strength, so....really, all Im out is the cost of the shaft. I just didnt figure it to begin with. Only AFTER the fact (after I did some research on what the tranny guy said) did I realize this.

There's CUSTOM and there's custom.
My FJ40 has a modified output shaft on the transmission because of the toy box. It's not common but it's not unheard of among FJ40's, I call that custom.


Fox by pass shock suspension that is unique on the planet is what I call CUSTOM. :D

I know what you mean. A ton of guys on Pirate are trying to tell me to cut down the full widths and what not......but hey, I don't have a steady supply of cash stacked up. If I did, I would buy 6 grand dynatracs and be done with it. Custom shafts start adding up!!
