Hi guys,

in the german Land Cruiser Forum (Buschtaxi) we discuss right now the problem one of our members had with his 1994 HZJ75.

The second time all 6 wheel bolts were torn off.

The owner manual says the wheel bolts torque is 210 NM.

We think this could be a typo in the german translation, because this seems to be a lot for such small bolts.

Can you check what torque is in your manuals?

Thanks.

Markus

Thatd be quite the workout to change a wheel out...
Wonder where he got that torque value from.
I torque mine to an even 100ft/lbs. Even on wheel spacers never had an issue

At this moment I can't find it in the manual (the ownersmanual and the Repair Manual for 7-series) but I allways torque them at 120NM. This value I got from the dealer several years ago. I never had any problem regarding snapping bolts or nuts getting loose. This is for steel rims.
If the German manual states 210 NM, I think it's a typo and it should read 120 NM.

This is what we thought, much too high.

Fortunately they noticed that the wheel began wobbling and could stop just in time.

4 bolts were still missing and two were damaged.

The garage in Turkey installed new bolts but didn’t use a torque wrench. They tightend them as much as they can, to be sure it will work. This caused that they obviously have overtighten the nuts, so it happened a second time.

Meanwhile we found out, that the right torque is 137 Nm -> owner manual

The 210 Nm (-> owner manual) belong to the 5 bolts HZJ78. Less bolts, but bigger diameter.

What do we learn: Always use the right owner manual and a torque wrench!

Thanks for your help, guys.
