Ok so I am having a couple problems with my 88 4runner not major but a big PITA

First off is the breaks, they are great except every one in a while I will go to step on them and have no pressure behind the peddle if I pump it again its back to normal. This is only happens once or twice in my 45 minute commute, keep in mind I drive threw Boston stop and go traffic so I am using them a lot. There is no air in the system and all my pads are new could it be the master cylinder?

Second is I go threw starters like they are going out of style almost every 3 mounts or so I have to start hitting them with a hammer I have gotten them from Napa, auto zone and from Toyota (they last the longest) so WTF :mad:is going on with these starters I am getting kind of desperate with this one issue here

I'd look at the master cylinder or power booster for the brakes.

As for the starter, keep the Toyo one, and replace the contacts behind the plate with the three screws on it. The contacts can be found at Toyota dealers for $30+, or get them online or in local electronics repair shops for $5 a piece. The plunger (inside the starter, behind that plate) wears these copper contacts out. It takes ten minutes to replace both of them, and keep a couple extra sets around; you'll need them.

The first issue sounds to me like the rear brakes need to be adjusted (tightened). Do you use your e-brake every time you park? This is what keeps the brakes properly adjusted.

you are catching on here quick! this is exactly the response i would have given.

this should be checked and adjusted, regarles of the fading pedal, nat.
also, it is likely that the master is slowly failing, i suggest you gather the funds and resourses soon to replace it, in the event it suddenly fails completly.

back to the starting issue, check the integrity of the battery connections. also, check the bat cable connection on the starter. just make sure that the copper lug is not loose on the wire.

plus, check the spade terminal that connects to the solenoid. make sure it is clean, and connecting tight. if you are constantly removing and installing it, you can wear out the ridgedness(sp) of it and it will be loose

that was the firt thing i thought that may have been it so i replaced the rear pads and drums, I adjusted them so they were sligtly draging but the issue was still present

with all the rest ruled out i think your right about the master slowley failing, time to stop buy toyota hey i gata stop buy anyways and get my starter that was on warrenty:D
i will try and get it done this weekent and let you know how it turnes out, thanks

i cant see haveing to service the starter every 3 months or so. i am going to open up the starter to se if the contacts are worn out if they are some one is useing a cheep copper grade that wears out fast, if thats the fact i will order some proper contacts, hopefully thats the problem

Solved the starter problem turns out that the round copper disk on the plunger had some high spots and was barley making contact so I filled it flat and filed the contacts put it all together reinstalled it and the starter sounds allot stronger then it did when it was new

As for the breaks I am going to start by replacing the hose to the break booster and see if that helps if not I will get a new master cyl. thought id try and narrow the problem down so I can save some coin
