Picasa Web Albums - Andy - ACT 2008 Whee...

After the cut last Sunday Gary and I were talking about the Alaska-CruiserTrek.
I think this is probably the ultimate Cruiser adventure!
Some pics of this years Trek, there are more on Mud in the Events link.

I think we need to start planning a yankee toys caravan to the 2010 event. I have a freind that lives in fairbanks and we are seriously thinking about going. I have been in the area of this years trek and it is way better that the pictures.

funny that this was brought up, wife and i have been talking out making the trip in 2 years when she is done with school one of the reasons why i got this 80:D

As the taker of the above pics, they truly do not begin to do it justice.

Probably a great trip....but look at all that mud!

ACT is the inspiration that I built my fj62 on. i wanted to be able to get there then be able to do the trails. i remember an article in TT on ACT 2000 or so that had a line in it that went something like " lockers and 35" tires minimum" every ounce of energy that went into my build up had ACT as its goal. Sad that i never made it out there. just never got the cruiser ready enough. I will prolly end up selling it once the 45lv is done. with the 1/4 trailer with the roof top tent I don't need the cruiser to be quite so expidition ready. oh well Mark Whatley's stroes and articles have been a major force and factor in the direction I have built my cruiser's

so if we were to plan a YT contingent going to ACT 2010 would we caravan out or ship the trucks and fly out. how long a trip are we talking? 7 days for ACT atleast 5 coming and going so a minimuim of 3 weeks to be safe.

should we plan a 2009 labrador and back trek. to iron out wrinkles and see what as a group would be needed.

Jason.

how many days would that be Dave?

That sounds awesome. :)

We should at least do the Vermont north to south border to border that the VTXS did.

now this is what i am talk'in about :D

Dave,

I emailed the Vermont guys after the spring meeting. They have had such a great response that they now charge to take other groups with them and it is quite a hefty fee.

We would be better off doing our own research and just putting together an expedition run. Ernie and I have been talking about it for some time but we just didn't have time to put anything together. I started a new job this week and now have all my weekends off so we are up to help put an expedition together. We spent time last week driving a lot of Class VI roads that Kina recommended to us and we could even do a small expedition in NH I would think.

I bet we could do a nice NH run as well, north to south there are SO many Class VI's then sidetracks Up Mt. Washington, in Kina's area, all the way to Berlin and Jericho State Park (once they allow 4x4's that is.)

:)

Any long distance group trip sounds great!
We just need to set a date far enough in advance so we can all
plan to get the time off. The more remote the better!

Northern Maine is a possibility

Northern Maine is a possibility

i have a place in northern Maine in Frenchville, 9 hours up. there are some really remote places up there especially on the logging part of Maine. my father and law has set up the ham radio towers for the can am sled dog race so i am sure he knows a lot of remote places to travel i will ask him tonight

Maybe start up north of Moosehead, and head up through the Allagash to where RT. 161 picks up. I think you'll find it's mostly dirt roads and logging trails. There should be some Atlantic salmon fishing up the way until the middle of next month, too.

Carry LOTS of extra fuel.

How much is the fee for 1 truck? I say we take donations and send in one lone truck with GPS tracking software and be done with it.

That one truck couldn't be me as I have too much Boston in me but Lane is a pretty mild mannered gentleman.

If you go to Vermont Overland Guide Services it gives the breakdown of what they are offering. There are 3 different options for trips that range from $250-$295 per truck with a 3 vehicle minimum. They were willing to put something together for Yankee Toys if we wished to do it but it was with only a 10-20% discount.
