Got your attention eh?
So, I've only had my cruiser since Saturday, so this may be completely normal, but here goes....
I have this strange sound that only occurs for the first quarter mile when I begin my commute in the morning. It can only be described as a high pitched whine, very similar to a jet engine spooling up. Sounds like it's coming from the passenger side, front. I let my engine run for a few minutes every cold morning, religiously. But if I was pressed to guess, I would say it's the cv joint? No vibration, smooth as can be, but definitely a whining sound for a short time, then it stops. Am I crazy?

Also should add, it's been ridiculously cold here, when I drove it Monday, it was 70*,and I didn't notice it then.

It's probably gear whine from the fluid being really cold and not moving as freely as it normally does. Then as it warms up it becomes more viscous and the noise fades.
Yes! This makes sense, because I don't get the noise when I'm leaving home, I Park in a heated garage, but not at work, when leaving there I hear it. You may be on to something...... So anything I can do?

Same here. Transfer case whines at 40 degrees or less for a short distance. Sounds like an old farm truck in low gear.:D
If you have an alternator whine you could hear that at idle and more so with increased rpms.

My wife and I were leaving the other day and she heard the tcase wine for the first time I guess. Of course I explained to her it was just something it does when it is cold out. I switched to synthetic 2 years ago and maybe it got a little better but I can't remember now. It would be a good idea to change your tcase fluid if you don't know if it was ever changed though.

Gear whine. No big deal. Mine did that when cold since new. Made it at least 16 years without causing a problem.
