I took my fj60 to an ASE certified Master Mechanic. This guy is a geneous. HOWEVER.... I took the truck for the exhaust leak. I went to pick it up tonight and he showed me where the air rail had rusted through on the number 6 cylinder. He cut the rusted part off and pluged it, so I have no air injection into number 6. Is this ok? I really wanted to keep the truck stock. What are your thoughts?

The air rail going down to the CAT? The one that sits on the driver's fender or you talking exhaust manifold?

The smog pump puts air into the exhaust in two places. One is the air rail up on the head. The other is down near the cat. I forget which place gets the bulk of the pump output. Plugging #6 port shouldn't matter much as long as you also plug up the rusted out rail so that 1-5 still get some air.

If ya don't plug the air rail at the #6 'cut off', you get:
- exhaust fumes under the hood
- noise ( that ya might hear over the standard noise...)

I had the same problem with my #4 cylinder. I didn't think it would make much of a difference but it did. I had to get another air rail to pass emmissions testing. Like it was already mentioned, if you don't have emmissions testing in your area you are ok. Otherwise cruiserparts.net is the way to go.

If its the air rail that runs along the head your refering to, I have a new one still in plastic wrap. PM me if interested....?

Lots of PB blaster needed.
If the nuts start twisting the ports going into the head be careful...could break.

I just removed one of these the other day. The air injection manifold has compression fittings on the end of each of the six "legs". The nuts on those fittings thread onto fittings in the head. The fittings in the head are threaded in. FJ60guy is saying, I think, that if those fittings in the head start to move as you're unscrewing the compression nuts, BAD THINGS could happen.

And if BAD THINGS do start happening, it's time for more penetrating oil. Also, hold the head fittings with a wrench as you're unscrewing the air rail nuts.

All that said, mine came off really easily once I cleared enough junk out of the way to get at the #6 leg, which is buried back there.

Nope, not desmogging. Parting out. :)

Even though I've got a working emissions system, it beats the hell outta me what you'd need to replace. :D

I think the best advice is to get a copy of the factory emissions manual and make sure your system is functioning correctly. Once you figure out what (if anything) is wrong, you can order the correct parts.

The emissions manual is about $14 from Toyota publications. If your local dealer can't get it for you, contact Cruiserdan and ask him to get you one. Instructions on finding him are in a sticky on the "Vendors/Manufacturers" forum here on IH8MUD.
