i recently purchased a new voltage regulator for my '81 bj42, as my old one is over charging, +/-34 volts. the issue is the old one looks to have 5-6 wires and the new one has 2, and grounds through the case.
has anyone dealt with this?
thanks,

Not directly answering your query, but the aftermarket voltage regulator I bought was a direct plug in replacement.

Have you tried adjusting the voltage in the old regulator. Open it up, bend one of the tabs. Care to not short anything out - it makes a big spark! Details are in the workshop manuals.

What you have there is a 3 wire regulator. It's not going to work.
What you need for a 24Volt '81 BJ42 is a 6 wire regulator, part# 27700-57010 replaced by 27700-57080 with a rectangular (General Market) connector or 27700-57030 with a round (Canadian Market) connector.

Here is some stuff to read.

Or you try to fix the old one. Most common problem is that the contacts are stuck in the "full charge" position.

EDIT: Aftermarket replacements for the 27700-57010 seems to be: AVR512, JAPKO214 (or JAPKO77214).
Other numbers are: 770214, RE214 and 77214.

thanks guys.

That looks like the one I got from 4 Wheel Auto. It will work, but you have wire it in correctly. 4 Wheel Auto has a little schematic that shows where to plug everything in. I've attached it below. Sorry, it has been sitting on my workbench for 2 years collecting grease and grime. Basically, you plug the green wire into the odd lug in the alternator plug. The orange wire goes to switched ignition. That's it.

As to what was said above about getting a plug and play VR, no one makes the Canadian market VR. The plug is different. I tried SOR's and switched the plug, but it never would work.

So this voltage reg will work? You are saying to connect it directly to the alternator? what about wiring connects at the original vr? i am gonna try an adhustment first. anyone know how to make this adjustment? I will open up the original vr tonight.

That is correct. It will work. Unplug your current VR. Plug the new VR up according to the diagram and it will regulate your voltage. As I said in my other thread, you lose some functionality, but at least you'll be regulating and back on the road. I personally found a good used OEM VR and would recommend it if you can find one or fix your current one.

As far as adjusting your current VR there are 2 arms you can adjust. The FSM has a pretty good write up in it. Maybe someone can upload the pages, or just download the 3B FSM from the stickies above. It is pretty straight forward.

Thanks freak.

Some words of wisdom.......
Bending the arms will change the voltage and the set-off point.
There is no reason why those arms are out-off-spec.
First check if the contacts are clean/not burned and not sticked together. They must move easily.

For more info on VR's go to my thread about 3 and 6 wire VR's: -►

Also in this thread is the adjustment procedure (post #13) from the FSM.
