I was getting a little antsy yesterday, so I found a white '91 30 miles from me and went to give it a look -- I thought i always liked white cruisers, so it was a good excuse for the pups and me to get out of the house --

-- well, it was a nightmare -- the stealer wanted $8K for it, with 133K miles -- the rear window was replaced, there was touch-up on rust spots, an aftermarket radiator, etc --

-- the worst thing though was the dealer-installed roof-rack -- it'd been on there a good 13 years, and the rust was a cancer -- there was a good 1/4" of bubbling rust around one of the rack footpads -- and this was UGLY rust -- bubbling and all --

-- so, for those looking to yank their racks and put rosebuds in, I'd suggest it after this visit --

-- I just hope this doesn't happen to the wind-flector on my '94 --

White trucks rock!

And what does this thread have to do with aftermarket roof racks?
6 inch Slee Lift and 35s.webp

Yeah, ya'll just keep reminding me what I need to do on an off weekend...

However, I did just pick up a set of 8 Con-Fer gutter mounts to begin the process of the custom rack design!

Back Again!!! Thanks Woody!

I removed my OEM rack yesterday and filled the holes like Dan suggested. I wasn't able to find stainless hardware, so for now zinc coated will have to do. It required:

8 - 5mm x 16 machine screws
8 - #10 finishing washers
8 - 7/16 o-rings

It took me a total of about 15 minutes to remove the old rack and install the new leakproofers. Now I need to find time to sand off the rust and treat the roof.

It's easy. If you have been thinking about it, do it.

BTW, white is over-rated -- I no longer yearn for a white cruiser --
Finally something eric and I agree on.

Curran, I'm anxious to see that fugly beater up here in July dude. Looking forward to it.

H - dude, you're starting to sound like me going through so many racks that the strip clubs are envious. BTW, if you like the mounting concept of the Hannibal (not material though), I just machined some up out of stainless to see how they would look and fit. I'm digging them so far, but have a lot more work to do before I decide if that's the route I want to take or not.

Junk-

any pics of your mounts? that's the last stop of my rack design before I start cutting and welding. I realize there are a few I can buy and incorporate, but making my own is intrigging.

to me, dealer-installed is the same as after-market --

Gurran,
what kind of lift do you have on your 80?

Dan,
It's Slee's 6 inch lift with modified rear upper shock mounts a la bjowett and no sway bars. I was waiting until I could get some decent pictures then create a new post about it. I totally dig it so far.
