I have a 1972 FJ40 that has been a project since 2008, I’m getting towards the end. I’m looking for a roll cage, that the piece behind the front window goes down in front of the dash, then goes back some, so the tubing goes behind the door opening. Downey had one they offered like that, but since they closed I haven’t been able to find one like it. Any one know of one built like that? Thanks Dan

I thought that most A pillars were made as you describe, unless I'm missing something in your description.

As an example, MetalTech makes several 40 cages (including ones in kit form) that include an A pillar like that. Here is a photo of my roll cage, which was made from a MetalTech "Jackson" cage kit. Notice the A pillar - is that what you are thinking of?

No, what I want is the door opening completely open, so right right below the bottom of the dash it goes towards the firewall, I was gong to give MetalTech a call next week. I had a local guy that was going to make it for me, but his rock crawling business got really going good, thanks for the feed back.

Hmmm... seems like you would lose a lot of strength that way. If you did actually roll it (I've only flopped mine on its side), you would want the force exerted to go as straight as possible to the frame tie-in. If you had that big of a dog-leg, there would be a large lever to bend that horizontal section going towards the firewall, potentially collapsing the top of the cage. Just thinking out loud though - never tried what you are describing. Good luck with it in any event.

Might have to re-think it, the strength is the most important thing, again
Thanks for the feedback

Here's the best solution that I've seen. WFO in Auburn CA built this for me based on something I saw on Fordyce.

I had a roll cage built for my bronco a few years back. It was not that much more after it was finished than some of the ones u find online that come in pre bent parts and u have them welded. Any good sized fab shop will be able to handle this.

That looks sweet. Super clean.

Yes, it clears the hard doors

No matter what you decide or go with, make sure that connecter bars between front cage and rear bar are routed as far away from your head as possible. I've seen too many connecter bars routing right over the drivers head, or too close for comfort.
