I have a 69 FJ45, with the stock gas tank mounted under the passenger seat. I'm going all aftermarket gauges, and have an aftermarket tach, speedo, oil prees and water temp gauges already mounted, and all work fine.
Believe or not, the fuel level gauge was the hardest. Initially I didn't want to change the OEM fuel sender, etc, but here is what I got, it works and is pretty cheap in price
See the attachments below from Summit racing:
-The fuel sender was VERY easy to install. Its adjustable in depth and works with the stock tank. The ONLY issue were the mounting holes in the sender. I believe there are five of them. A couple of the holes on the sender are slightly off center of the stock holes in the gas tank. I just used the gasket that comes with the sender, used it as template, and 3 minutes later I had the holes I needed. The included instructions, wire diagram are simple and no fuss. Installation took about 10 minutes
The other attachment below, the gauge, comes out of the pictured bracket if desired and can fit in a 2-1/16" hole
I mounted my gauge up high on the dash, where it can be seen. You can get it white or dark face
Bottom line: These two items work together, with very little fuss
