For some reason my 85 FJ60 (with all the emissions stuff) gives a nice afterfire whenever I upshift after going up a huge hill. Whenever it has high revs and the gas is let off, it sounds like pieces are falling off the back (which they're not). And it's progressively getting worse, since I would think afterfiring isn't good for the exhaust system. But I've checked the deceleration fuel cutoff system per the emissions control manual, and everything worked like it should. What actually causes an afterfire? Is there anything else I could check? Thanks!

There are others who know more about this than me, but I would check our ignition timing.
