had an after market cat installed that is about 1/2 the size of the original- the inspection guy said that it will pass with a new one- it did- but not sure if i am loosing any performance, more smoke pass thru- it is running rich- but not as much smoke would come out with the older oem cat. Any ideas??

We'll need a lot more detail if you're going to receive some good advice about your truck. I've got an aftermarket cat on mine that passes emissions just fine but it was running rich because the carb was failing after 240,000 miles. Sounds to me like the cat's doing it's job, but something forward isn't quite up to snuff.

thanks for the reply-the mechanic retarded the timing to help it pass emmisions we were having problems with the NO #'s-we have not had time to tune it up since it finally passed with a new cat? my main concern is if the new considerably smaller cat will hurt my excelleration- or have any major effec. It sounds louder now- the thing was put on cocked so the plate on the botton is at an angle????? they said this is the only way it would fit- any thoughts?

I would not worry about it if you passed smog. It has to be running pretty good to pass smog even with a new CAT. The CAT can only do so much.

I doubt you have an exhaust restriction but you can check with a vacuum guage hooked to the intake manifold while driving.

Just be glad you passed smog and can get the smog monkeys off your back..

what about the O2 sensore, or any brackets?

If it sounds louder then air is passing more freely through the new cat. I used to have an 89 isuzu trooper (before I had my 60) and I removed the cat, without the cat the engine sounded louder and you could (almost) feel the difference in acceleration(maybe it was just the louder sound.)

I put in an aftermarket CAT on a year ago...it passed smog OK but it still stinks (literally). My carb is probably running rich also.

how does the aftermarket cats handle to 02 sensor? do they has their own, or do you need to mod tham to use existing ones?
