I would X2 the cleaning out of the tank and then a flushing of the fuel lines.

im surprised any dielsel vehicle runs over there

Well the truck has been mine for over 20 years and I plan on keeping it much longer. I intend to keep the crap out of the tank as much as possible using the filter funnel.

The diesel vehicles do run here, the question is how well do they run? Clouds of black smoke even when traveling at low speeds on level roads so you know it they do not run well. They no doubt have messed with the fuel delivery and even possibly the timing. I also doubt there are many vehicles, gas or diesel, that survive more than 4-5 years on the roads here under the not so watchful care of the local "mechanics". I am the ONLY mechanic for my truck.

 Mr. Funnel!!

I just want to put in another vote for the Mr Funnel system. I use it and it keeps virtually all the water and dirt out of your tank. Then the stock filter system (water sep, spin on full flow and fuel pump final filter) can do its thing. I also use Pri-D additive to recondition and stabilize the diesel. Awesome stuff!

If you live on the wet coast, you are going to get water in your fuel tank just via the moisture in the air. That is why most tanks have drains on them.
