I ordered the AFE CAI about a week ago and it came in last night, Total removal of the stock intake and install of the AFE was about 35 minutes.
First impressions are at idle you cannot tell the differance, but once you are driving at normal speeds you can hear a slight differance. As soon as you give it WOT, this thing is very LOUD. I can feel a diferance in throttle responce above 2500 RPM, and you can tell it is moving more air.

Looks alot the the TRD one.

Which AFE filter model did you use? I see that one increases hp by 13 and the other states that it can increase hp up to 50. Is one a better application for the FJ versus the other one?

Here is the CAI # 54-81162, It's supposed to ad 13HP and 21 fpt. I found one on Ebay for $285.00 plus free shipping. I did not see one for the FJ Cruiser that added 50hp, nor do I think a cold air intake could make a 50hp gain in the FJ.

50 hp sounds quite high to me as well, although, the AFE website says their PRO-GUARD 7: 75-81162 may do it depending on the application. I see the one that you installed is the PRO DRY S: 51-81162 as listed on their website. Both are listed at the same price, but what is the difference - if any, I wonder?

From what I've read, The pro-guard 7 has better filtration with 7 layers of filter media. the one I got has 5 lavers of filter media, less protection but flowes more air. Either filter will do the trick, it just depends on where you drive.

hmmm.... i've alwaysd been a fan of free breathing motors, but this intake saises 1 question and one concern for me. my question is how would this impact a snorkel? and my concern is the little "additional intake scoop" (look at the bottom of the box in this pic)

what kind of impact will that have on running deep water?

I see your concern about the extra intake scoop, but where the air box is located the water would be almost over the head lights before it hit the air box. Also you could block off this extra scoop with a piece of closed cell foam durring water crossings.
