My 2007 LC has 55,000 miles and the dealership said my left front shock is leaking and needs to be replaced. quoted $732 (northern california location) for both front shocks and labor. said that each shock alone was over $200 bucks.

I did a "shock" search on the forum, but am more confused now. Does ACH keep you from just replacing the front shocks w/ regular shocks they way you would on another truck? what's so special about these OEM shocks. need help understanding.....or is dealer just trying to rip me off.

I'm handy (have a 74 ford bronco that I wheel and have done a lot of work on) and would like to do this myself, but seeking advice.

thx

Others with suspension experience will be able to help more, but online parts sites list different shocks for AHC vs non-AHC, with the AHC shock about $152 each ($206 retail).

Hey OP. Do a bunch of searching on AHC and see the wealth of info here; especially from uHu. I had AHC issues early on and this group helped a bunch. I am not trying to dodge your question, but I think you will benefit from all the info. If your "shocks" are leaking, it could be that something else is causing higher than design pressure and that is what really needs to be fixed.

My front shocks leaked as well. Then, I replaced the damping force actuator accumulators (no joke) and they stopped. It is worth digging around a bit. I now love AHC, once I figured it out.

Best regards!

thx. will do. appreciate the advice.

Hmmm...I've got a thread here https://forum.ih8mud.com/100-series-cruisers/644448-rear-shock-leaking-ahc-issue.html regarding leaking/weeping rear shock(s) on my 2006 LX. I've been reading a ton of the AHC threads, and after reading your post, I'm wondering if my rear coil springs could have softened and sagged a bit and is putting more pressure on the rear shocks "causing higher than design pressure", and causing them to leak. Based on what you reported, I'd really be happy if replacing the rear coils would resolve this issue and not require shock replacement. The mechanic quoted close to one large for replacing the rear shocks. Did your shock leaks look similar to mine in my photos, as if they're originating up inside under the dust shields somewhere and only affecting the lower shock tubes?

Did you see the leak yourself first hand? I would never take the dealership's word on repairs without personally confirming, or better yet get a second opinion.

They are special shocks. See the attached FSM excerpt to give you an idea on how these differ slightly than conventional shocks.

Also 2nd what other people say. Confirm the leak yourself. Also, many people have reported minor leaking with no issues otherwise.
