Hi all, i own a 1985 HJ60 (2H diesel) and am wanting to turbo it, as it lacks alot on hills, overtaking, etc.

I heard that the toyota ct26 turbo is a good match, do any of you have experiance with these turbos and like them, or would you reccomend somthing else. If so what?

Rich

quick recommendation...

this forum is mainly petrol motors and americans

be lured to the "dark" side of international/diesel forum, full of aussies, canucks and even a few kiwis with too much knowlegde about diesels...
and also hang a search on the subject! :D

Randrandrew, only thing i will say about turboing a 2H is to consider heat build up and heat soak and how to manage it effectively. Here in Australia, the 2H aren't a big fan of long hot summer days and aftermarket turbos without a huge radiator and some sort of increase in air flow through the engine bay. just my $0.02 cents worth. The father had a 60 with an aftermarket turbo on the 2H, made a heap of grunt, but hated the heat, lots of time spent with bonnet vents and bigger radiators etc.

The 2H is not as good a turbo candidate as the trusty 3B. The 2H lacks piston skirt cooling and I've heard of ring issues as well.

Just keep in mind a pyrometer and carefull with your 2H head. 2H is a indirect injecton engine ..

And about the candidate .. ( nothing personal C guy ;) ) I thought you can make more HP from a 6 inline 2H vs 3B 4 banger .. :D

P.D. I own a 2H engine .. in a HJ-60 :D

You got two more jugs but you don't get 33% more power!! Most of the time the power of the 2H over the 3B is not that great!

Gonna send this over to the Deisel / 24 volt / Intl section (whatever they are calling it now). Many experienced turbodiesel folks over there who might be able to help you out.

Could you not intercool the turbo kit to help with the lack of piston cooling the 2h has?

That should keep the heat to a mininmum.

run 10 psi and thru an intercooler. No reason why it should not work for you.

A few general comments first:
My 2H in a HJ60 (30k miles on the engine only) has a LOT more power than the 3B in the BJ70 (180 k miles on that one). It pulls on hills in 4th where I would have to go down into 3rd with the 3B (granted, it has 4.11s whereas the 3B has 3.73s, but that will soon change).
There are no cooling issues at all on long inclines with a 2 row radiator now.

We put the turbo on last weekend, and I will write this up in detail soon, but I am out of town right now. Also, the truck does not have a new exhaust yet, the gages are not hooked up, and the fuel is not dialed in.
The turbo kit is from Turboglide, and it is a very well done unit with a garret unit (c28 I think, could be c26).
There are a few tricks to the installation, but generally it is straight forward.
The only part that needs to be welded is the oil return into the side plate.
the biggest pain is tightening the manifold bolts, since a few are a real pain to get to. and the turbo is pretty close to the brake booster on a left hand drive, we'll see how that works out. Brake booster has to be removed for the LHD installation of the turbo.
as with any Diesel engine, the temps will need to be watched, that's why we have pyros. I also have a 4 row radiator on the shelve, but have not dropped that one in yet.
As I said, I'll write this up in detail soon (next week, I guess), for Michael's website, and for the HJ60 renovation thread.

I drive and care my 2H engine like a turbo engine .. I have a pyro, oil press, oil temp VDO gauges to be sure about the status of my engine when I drive hard.

Also I need to be honest and say when my engine had 447 k km on it and perform the total overhaull I need to change 6 precups and many other wosts parts, why, in most of cases head.

But I know that is a weak point in my engine, and I have 4 rows alum radiator, flex a lite S blade fan to be safe when it temp goes up. So in my dreams I turboed my engine with a T28, intercooler and 3" exaust pipe at 14 PSI of boost.

In my dreams with this setup I plan to get much more HP that you ususaly get from a 3B engine ( yap I know it's also a good engine )

Sounds like a crook fan? There are heaps of 2H turbo jobs here in the north running with out heat problems. Realise also that the wagon has a lot more air space inside the engine bay than a HJ75. A lot of the hj75 trucks here tow builders trailers and boats etc.
