I keep going back and forth on what I want to do next/what route I want to go with this build.
So, I'm going to leave a few things up to you guys. :hillbilly:

First, some background. Bought it from a dealer that found it for me. 1 owner rig, bone stock with full maintenance history. Garage kept it's entire life, thus the near perfect paint (until I got it.. ;))

Day I bought it:

1993 Model - Fully locked and loaded.

Lockers (PO had apparently never used) make a stock rig work wonders.

Had to throw the RTT on for a camping run:

Next came some 285s:

Added a snorkel, and plenty of "pinstriping"

Then came some 35s, and a whole lot of wheeling...

Having trouble finding my wheeling pics.. These are post front bumper damage (thanks to a large boulder at Cass)

After that, I got the bug...

I can tell you, that if you decide to go big, you better have a LOT of free time to make that setup work well...

-Custom suspension (flipped radius arms)
-Part time kit
-Lockout hubs
-Custom panhards
-Custom rear suspension

But once you get it all lined out, it works very well.

Rear bumper (no longer going with dual spares!)

Here is the first decision I need help with!

Part of me wants to go hardcore with this rig, rip off the fender flares, start doing some tube work (tube fender guards, tube sliders...ect)

Other part of me says to keep it clean and simple for now, and just do some step sliders.

I'm torn between light expedition exploring, and full on Ultimate Adventure (I *may* have submitted my app for 2012 Ultimate Adventure :D).

Maybe I can have a compromise of both?? What do you guys think?

*EDIT - I should clarify, that when I say go "hardcore" with this rig, that means that there will be no stopping. I've got 1 ton axles, and have been wanting to try my hand at building a 14 bolt front axle...

Awesome to see your rig's progression. I was drooling over it in your posts about flipping the arms, nice to see where it started.

First off, I think whether you are going to end up expo, rock or expo/rock hybrid...you need sliders.

Second, I would be looking for alternatives to having so much weight on the roof rack. At aprox. 8lbs per gallon, your CAD for the roof rack and sceptre cans are coming in at, what? 280lbs? + your RTT and some cargo boxes + the weight of the rack and associated lights and add-ons? That's a lot of weight up high...

Don't get me wrong, the rack set up and design is beautiful, but that much weight up top may equate to a flop when wheeling.

I think the main problem is that the two potential choices are somewhat at odds. When I built my 80, I also wanted partial expo and partial crawler but I erred on the side of roughing it a bit more for the sake of weight savings.

You wouldn't be willing to part with the file for the rear bumper would you?

I agree with Trepper50cal. While deployed in Africa in 09 we had a 70 series troppie with a roof rack. Between soldiers, gear and supplies for 6 days that roof rack was pretty heavy, there were time where you feel the 70 wanting to flip due to the amount of weight. I would keep the tent on the roofrack with the lights all around, swap some fuel/water cans towards the rear bumper since your only having one spare tire on it.

Awesome looking 80 BTW!

That rear bumper design is simply sick...

Nice rig!!! One thing I have learned building my 40 was to upgrade driveline components. When you go bigger, you need to go bigger/tougher on the components that make up your driveline. Chrome moly axles, beefer drag/relay links, ARP knuckle studs. Also armor up to protect you rig. It will take one opps to dent a door or rocker panel. I would save the 1 tons for the 400hp 6bt conversion. :) HTH

Thanks for the input!! You guys are definitely correct about the weight up top. :grinpimp:

99% of the time, I would never have that many fuel/water cans up there. ESPECIALLY if I was doing any wheeling.
I stuck those in the model to see how many would fit, if I were to take a week long stroll through the desert or something.

And the Rooftop Tent is gone now. This rig is just too tall for one. Climbing up there wasn't bad, but packing it back up, and trying to zip the cover on was a nightmare.
For now, it's interior sleeping platform for me! Maybe later I'll come up with a trailer.

Definitely going to go beefy with the drivetrain, just haven't decided "how" beefy yet... :D

Do I beef up the Toyota axles with Chromo parts?
-Cheapest/easiest option
-But will they hold up?

Do I swap in some 1 Tons?
-Trussed, Hydro Assist, 35 spline outers, ARBs
-Expensive, but bomb proof

Do I listen to my fab guy about tossing in some Mogs?
-More clearance, deep gears, options for CTIS
-Will they run down the highway (60mph) for long?

If you aren't willing to give away the model (which I understand). Would you be willing to give away just the frame and body portions so I could design my own rear bumper? Is that SolidWorks that you're using?
