I worry I’m re-opening a can of worms here, but how do all of your anti-wheel-lock people feel about these locks on the spare tire that has been moved up to the swing-out on the rear bumper?

Still a bad idea in your opinion?

I hate how it’s so on-display and not even a jack is needed to take it. Just three nuts.
Especially once I replace usual spare with a bronze wheel so as to match my other 4 heritage wheels.

But then, the stories some of you have mentions about the “key” failing give me pause.

Maybe a combination bike lock is better?

And yeah, I get that nothing is fool proof. Just looking for ways to get the criminals to look for easier prey.

That is the only place I use it.

If you want a lock, get some chain and lock your spare. Or adapt a u lock. The keyed lug nuts are pretty easy to defeat with a hammered on socket.

Almost every security device with a cable and/or marketed towards bicycles can easily be nullified by a thief. Advanced Wheel Locks are unique. They are difficult to remove with a hammered-on socket or gator-grip-type sockets. Generic keyed lug nuts are very easy to take off. If you read stories from car thieves online, you'll learn they usually look for easy targets.

I've got a Pewag security chain for the bike rack and bikes when we travel with high-quality locks. Most bolt/chain cutters can't cut through the chain due to the chain's shape. But a hand-held cylinder saw will cut through in about 10 mins. It'll take a few minutes to pick the locks. All I care about is inviting the thief to look for an easier target.
