We'll gang - we've adopted a trail with the SoCal TLCA chapter. Since we're both fairly small groups, Chris Heron and I decided it would be best if our two groups band together for this undertaking.

We had a great time with Greg Hoffman, the big cheese for the entire San Bernardino forest area. He rode with me and my son as I had a working odometer. We plotted by mileage all the items that needed work on 'our' trail 3N08. Trail itself is fairly easy. What Greg pointed out included areas where asshat 4wheelers and bikers had gone off approved trails where restoration/mitigation needed doing, illegal fire pits, trees/brush that needed clearing from the road sides, etc. There's a lot of work. Mark from the LA Trail Crew will be emailing me the maintenance plan that Greg wrote up during the tour of our trail. LA Trail Crew itself was looking for a trail with a little more challenge, but this trail will be great for us!

Closest maintained campground was Hanna Flats up out of Fawnskin, but there's a group campsite on a first come basis very near our trail. We and the SoCal TLCA chapter will get a trail marker with our logo on each end of the trail. More reason for me to get the stickers done!!!

Only things we did yesterday were to dismantle an illegal fire pit and restore the area as best we could. Shovels and a bucket for trash and glass I brought along came in very handy! We also found what appeared to be a hunting blind that we took apart.

For me, probably the best and most productive part of the trip was that Greg Hoffman had a perfect Eagle project for my son!!!!! :bounce2: He has a restoration project out near the Cahon Pass that needs doing around the end of October/early November. Best part of the project is that the US Forest Service provides all the plants/saplings that need planting for the project. NO fund raiser needed as the USFS will be providing all the materials. All my son needs to do is arrange the manpower. I'll post this up as it doesn't make a difference whether it's fellow scouts or adults that help with the restoration project. All the man hours count!!! Your mileage will be deductible at the IRS rate of $.22/mile to and from the project as it's scout related.

It wasn't a very long day up there. Part of the LA Trail Crew had mechanical problems on the way up. We were all supposed to meet at the ranger station between 8:30 and 9:00, but didn't get started until about 10:00. We ran the entire trail, stopping at a small 'yellow stake' campground along the trail for lunch. The yellow stake campground was a small campground for 8 that is free and on a first come basis. This one had some VERY fresh scat from a bear!
Ranger pointed out an old chimney that loggers had built and an active limestone strip mine. We finished up about 3:00.

I think it would be great as either a day trip or a weekend to go up and I can show you the trail and the things noted. This WILL entail some work on our part, so I hope that's what you all are willing to do.

If I can make it on the 6th, are all of you willing to run this trail? Otherwise we can arrange another time and perhaps coordinate it with the SoCal TLCA guys. I'll post pics soon. Ben Crocket from the Toyota 4wd Drive magazine was there for a photo op and perhaps small article.

Ranger told us that nationwide there are over 3500 Adopt-a-Trail members that help the forest service keep trails maintained! I truely hope we can all add our hours to this! Mileage for this is all deductible as well!!!

Strong work Brent. I personally don't have a problem doing some trail work from time to time. It is a very good cause to help erase some of the neglegence and disrespect of a few to help our 4wheeling community as a whole. I am up for a day trip up there, just need to co-ordinate it with the misus.

Brent,

It was nice seeing you up there and it was great to see you have such enthusiasm for the Adopt-A-Trail program. Hopefully, we can get the So Ca 80's and the So Ca TLCA groups to pitch in and keep this trail maintained. It looks like Mark Watkins is trying to set up a maintenance trip for August 18-19th. I am sure that he will post up with the details. Unfortunately for me, I have commitments through September so it will likely be awhile before I get back up there. BTW, also a good summary of the day's events!

Brent, let me know if you want me to add any of your photos to the webpage.

Nice pics - haven't had time to download mine yet.

I'm in NorCal the weekend of Aug 18-20 dropping off daughter at college, otherwise I'd be all over it. Mark and I talked at length yesterday. Hopefully he can still get a trip going. Looks like we've got a day trip for 8/6 to show our gang the trail and discuss interest.

Sounds like a good idea to get involved and be apart of the solution. My schedule looks to be open for the 8/6. Just need to confirm with the better half.

Brent, I have a nephew that's almost Eagle as well, can I get some more info on this to maybe have him help out as well? He's in Thousand Oaks and his father is a troop leader/ (awesome dutch oven operator)/teacher.
I understand that you have already gone once, will thee be more trips planned to this trail as well?

I'll certainly post up his project date and info here. The more manpower the merrier - and it boosts the hours my son can report for his project.

My contact info for the ranger is at home. His name is Greg Hoffman and he's the head of the San Bernardino National Forest region for the National Forest Service. Very nice guy. You can tell it's a passion and not a job to him. Had a blast having him in my truck for the day.

Best bet may be to contact the ranger station outside of Fawnskin and ask for him. He said he has plenty of projects.

He's currently making sure he's got the plantings for my son's proposed project. Hope he does - much easier not to have to raise funds these days for the projects.

Paul,
If the 80s goes back and inspect the groups trail in BB, do you want to do a 2 LC convoy down? Ill add another man to the manpower thats been mentioned.

Im basically free and flexible after the 2nd week of September and hopefully the date works out for me. Ill probably bring my kids to this one - oldest daughter will love it.

Hopefully see most of the group then.

1. I met Stan and saw his brand new Hummer ;) this morning. A very nice fellow by the way. Hes probably enjoying today in Los Padres NF/Hungry Valley. Its great to meet another Mudder and fellow 80s member.

2. Plus, I got a call from Greyhound in LA - package from photogod. I now have a new to me ARB winch bumper (without the bolts - waiting).

1+2 = What a great day (im off too!)

Bluto,

Nice to meet you and thanks for the map. Got a OHV map from the ranger, drove around Alomo Mountain for a while then went to Lockwood Creek.
That trail is all eating up, but 2L and a-trac got me up some steep rocky parts of the Weat frazier mine trail. It is rated easy but had not seen a truck in some time. Trail was grown over in parts, Had to mave a small tree, got to eat dirt for 2hrs fighting this trail.
Made some mistakes, should have reduced tire pressure and had another truck along for this trail.
But after the fact, I can say I had a BLAST.

Again nice to finally meet, see you at Surf-N-Turf if not before.

rfjtoy,

Sounds like you had a good day. Never doubted your rig yesterday. Hopefully the 80s crew will swing by here (do the Miller) before winter comes - October?

Awesome Cruiser by the way. My daughter thought it looked cool with the mods -since all we see around here are the stockers.

pics?
