Does anyone know if there is a way to adapt the famous ATRAC/VSC that 2000+ land cruisers have onto a 98-99?

The only reason I ask is that 2000+ land cruisers are more available for picking parts off now and it would be a pretty cool project to complete.

Or is it too complicated and to many parts are needed. Thanks ahead for any input.

Wheel speed sensors, abs computer and master cylinder would likely need to be replaced. I don't imagine it to be a simple process or others would have done so. It seems like most people would rather have a rear locker.

I do not regret having the rear locker but I was just curious about it.
If I can purchase a wrecked 2000+ landcruiser for let's say $1000 it's just like adding an ARB locker to a landcruiser that didn't have any lockers.
Thanks for the reply elk!

Yeah, I would dump the stupid VSC and the ATRAC for a rear factory locker anyday.

May I ask why? I will have my first chance to use atrac this weekend.
For me it's just a tried and proven system. Lockers just work. I trust my own driving and am slightly scared of the computer taking over.

I will have to try atrac and see how i like it. Never used either system. I will most likely use atrac for a while and see how it works out for me.

This... :) I have the system on our Sequoia.. It's annoying as heck... Specially when you least expect it and the warning system starts beeping at you and the feeling of lost power... Usually happens when you are in the middle of a snow storm or bad weather.. Last thing you need is another distraction.

^This lol. I ALMOST shared an anecdote from last winter where I drove my friend's 2000LC up to Tahoe instead of mine. VSC kicked in and freaked me out soooo bad. Learned two things: 1. I feel better driving my own LC; 2. I prefer to be situationally aware and use my breaks/throttle as needed. The whole idea of things, like lane assist for example, seem great on paper but make me wonder if it will allow drivers to be less aware. THAT scares the crap out of me, because there's nothing I can do about it while safely driving my own tank.

Well i dont know about dumping VSC. While driving the wife's Honda a few weeks ago in the rain it saved me from hydroplaning/sliding a few times. Granted we were at the point of needing new tires...but im glad it did its job.

I will be using ATRAC until i out grow it and get a auto locker.

Pretty scary feeling when you want to give your vehicle throttle and it cuts out on you.. Maybe it's just the Sequoia, but the VSC system is pretty sensitive as well.. I can set it off driving out of a local grocery store parking lot..

Traction control is reactionary... when it kicks in, you've already lost traction. A locker is a far better option. Traction aid.

I must say, I haven't had the ATRAC interfere with my driving yet; I've pushed the 100 fairly hard and it has worked beautifully without traction control.

The damned VSC is fxxxing stupid and dangerous. Every vehicle I have ever owned I have taken to an empty parking lot in snow to make it slide different ways so I know how the vehicle feels. With the 100, it beeps and screams, and it cuts power so that you have no control... Yes, there are times when a little foot on the gas will get you out of a slide: VSC makes sure you dont have that as an option.

Yes, it's sensitive... I was pulling a U-Haul up a CO pass and on a tight turn it started beeping and cutting power. Not exactly an ideal time  I was under complete control and driving just fine until that happened.

It's come on when I am entering a turn a little fast on dirt too. The cut of power is scary, you wont have the option powering out or anything...

I wanted a '98-'99 with the rear locker and no stupid electronics... but this one was so clean and the 2000 has a slightly stronger front pinion and still has 16in wheels, I couldnt pass it up.

I'll go ARB airlockers when I get the first chance...

Yeah stupid ATRAC.... oh wait works at any speed, on each wheel, provides a safety net for less experienced drivers. Yeah that sux.

Seriously a Locker is another option not a better one. They each have benefits in certain circumstances.

Perhaps if you took time to learn how to take advantage of ATRAC in stead of freaking out about it - there could be a benefit. When you add lockers to the rig then you'll have the best options for the circumstance. Open, selective/on-demand and locked. You will be king of the mountain!

For the OP it makes little economic sense from a retrofit perspective to try to add the ATRAC system.

Oh and one more thing - it's highly likely that your steering angle sensor is not set correctly thus giving you false VSC intervention.

 just because i dont like it doesnt mean i havent took the time to learn how to take advantage of it. i dont like software/electronic solutions :meh: i have never freaked out about it either... i just said why i dont like it or ANY traction control for that part.

i prefer an auto locker in the rear and a manual in the front. of course, i compromised on that when i picked up a 100.

i actually think it doesnt provide a safety net for less experienced diver at all. open diffs do that, keeping them from getting into situations they're not ready for...
