My wagon (85 FJ60) has been running roughly and my local mechanic thinks it could be the accelerator pump.He says it's beyond his expertise to rebuild the carb and doesn't want to tear into it. He's reccomended a retired mechanic that might be able to rebuild it for me but we're leaving for a four day 800 mile trip today.
Is the accelerator pump something that might just quit all of a sudden in the middle of the trip? I can deal with the rough running and I just put 700 miles on it in this shape but I don't want to end up stranded because we'll be a long ways from anywhere. We will have another vehicle with us and we're not going to be doing any serious four wheeling ,mostly just logging road travel. This is our last chance for a bit of exploring before I have to go back to work.
What do you think? Am I crazy to go without getting the carb fixed??

The accelerator pump squirts fuel into the carb when skinny pedal is pushed down. It helps in starting the engine and improves acceleration. If you have a dead spot or hesitation when trying to accelerate, you may have a weak pump. Take air cleaner off the carb and look down the primary barrel ( the one closer to the engine.) Have someone press the gas pedal, you should see a small stream of gas squirt into the barrel. A weak pump shouldn't really affect constant speed driving. It might be hard to start but I'll be that the pump is still putting out something even if it is weak. I wouldn't worry about it. On the other hand, the rough running might have nothing to do with the accel pump.
