My truck just came to a coasting halt. Idles ok, but no fuel.
Look under the hood, the accelerator cable moves fine...look lower down, the linkage has come apart. See pics below, one end still looks ok, the other end looks not so good.

I reconnected the rusted end and tied it tight with a little mini-bunji chord, which was enough to get me that last 1.5 miles home.

anybody know the part number and/or can I just put this back on and crimp it tight onto the ball joint?

sorry its a 1986 BJ74 13BT
I think I found the part number, but can not locate one:

78103-90K00 accelerator connecting rod

I see one on megazip but I understand that they may be a scam website?

There are a number of other toys that use that style of connection, find one and cut end off and weld it onto your rod with the correct length...(measure it before you cut)

Hello,

If I remember correctly, a number of BJ74 parts are no longer available from Toyota. I might be wrong, though.

Factory manuals are not very helpful when it comes to accelerator cables. Either that or I was unlucky trying to find out.

Perhaps a cable assembly from a 3B or a 15B engine?

So far two parts dealers (one in Japan, one in Australia) have said they can't get the part.
I wonder if a cable might work....

the ball sockets on the rod are still ok, it seems like its the crimping bits that are shot. Maybe I can just use the existing rod and come up with another way to hold it securely across the linkage....

any other ideas from folks?

Mine popped off a couple of times, worked out that two things were contributing to it. Firstly that the cable was adjusted so that the pump end of that rod got to the end of it's travel before the pedal did, so you were effectively using your foot to try to stretch that rod. Adjusted the cable and pedal stops so that the pedal ran out of travel first.

Second thing was that one bit of loom had been routed so at full throttle it tried to push the rod off its ball, re-routed that.

Unfortunately yours looks a lot more flogged than mine. Measure the diameter of the ball ends and maybe you can get lucky.

In a pinch, I reckon you could have a shot at lashing it on with some fine-ish wire

Rust expands like water freezing, so perhaps take the spring steel clip off the rod end, clean up all the rust and pop the clip back on (after painting) and maybe it will function again. You might be able to squeeze the clip together a little as well, to increase it's hold.

Or perhaps a trip to your local import wrecker and look for some rods with those ends and make something work.
