AC only blows cold when i am in gear and moving. does not blow cold when idling.

possible reason?

Good question, I have the same (no?) problem.

Same Here but 89 Camry

Dont mean to hijack with the wrong vehicle even but at least its an 80s toyota.
My camry does the same damn thing. Sometimes the idling will suffer when compressor tries to kick on. Freezes me out when Im at speed but at a light or stop she wants to idle rough sometimes even dies. If I do not run AC idle is perfect never dies.

yeah it sucks doesn't it? riding around is great but, god forbid you come to a red light..time to roll down the windows..then roll them back up once you get going again!

do your RPM's jump around when the AC is on and idleing? if so you need to adjust the AC idle speed on the front of the carb.

or the AC amp needs to be adjusted, its the little black box on the AC unit in the cab, its about the size of a pack of smokes and its on the front of the black box my the passangers left foot. Look for a little blue knob on top............turn it one way or the other...........this controlls when the AC kicks on at what RPM.

that is what is weird is i have no problems with the idle or overheating....

Actually...

I am daily driving my 88 FJ62 which has no AC whatsoever and it is supposed to crack triple digits here in "D" Town. Anyone fancy a steam?

thanks landpimp....
i have not noticed if the rpms changed or not...i don't think they have, but i will check it out tomorrow and see. so any particular direction it needs to be turned, or just experiment with it?

been there done that....drove a truck with vinyl seats in no ac for 8 years in the houston area....can you say arse sweat?

the FSM has some specs..................but just experement.......it is suppose to set what RPM"s the AC kicks on off at so left is prolly lower, right higher.................or maybe not ;)

The blue button is an adjustment to the idle cut-out switch. FSM says that the AC compressor should cut-out at 650 rpm. The blue button is used to adjust the compressor so that it cuts-out at 650 rpm. I have no clue WHY it's to be set that way however. I suggest setting the idle speed a bit higher, then you'll get cool air even at stop lights. (Works for me...)

FSM says that counter clockwise is H, clockwise is L. I think this means that turning it clockwise reduces the rpm at which the AC cut-out switch "cut's out." Mine seems to work, so I didn't fiddle with it.

Now I have a question for you all...I just had my system converted to R132. The shop followed the Toyota Service Bulletin for doing the conversion. They said my compressor was old and worn and wouldn't get too cold as a result. It's better than no AC, and in Seattle, it's not that big a deal. (It had nothing in the system when I brought it to them, so I've gone from no AC to mild AC, which is a nice improvement. )

Anyway, the truck is from the South, so the AC was probably used a lot. Should I keep my eye's open for a lower milage compressor? Would that make a difference?

Thanks for any help.

Best Regards,

A few things can cause this, as Landpimp said; check if the idle up vacuum solenoid and motor are working. When the A/C switch is pushed and the fan is on it should send a signal to the solenoid to open vacuum to the idle up motor/actuator. This will make sure you are over the 650rpm setting of the A/C amplifier (little black box with blue knob as mentioned). Only then will the compressor switch on.

Another cause could be the cooling fan not moving enough air across the condenser (in front of radiator) at idle. Since you don't have an over heating problem, this is probably not the problem, but keep it in mind.

Best Regards,

If it cools ok, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. You should get about 40 deg F at the center register with the fan on high and recirculate on. Does it make a lot of noise? Was the receiver/drier window cloudy? How did they know it was warn out?

Nix 99 (nix99.com) says they have a few for around $60 (one out of an '87 with 56,000 miles), but you don't really know what you are getting even with a "low mileage" one. Has it been open to the air? Did it run without Freon/oil for a while? I think a reman is about $240 at Arizona Mobile Air (ackits.com) with a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty. Others may be about the same locally.

heat index was 105 degrees yesterday in the Deep South, I had to drive my FJ40 for 2 weeks while the 60 was in the shop...that will make a MAN out of you.

but its a dry heat :D

Brandon,
The air is way warmer than 40 degrees. The compressor makes noise, kind of variable actually, sometimes pretty loud. I don't remember if the receiver/drier was cloudy or not. They thought it was worn based on the noise, and the reduced cooling.

Actually, in the week since I had it "repaired" I think it's cooling less and less. I think I need to take it back. Usually I do my own work, but I wasn't sure the Freon thing was something I could do on my own...

Now for the really stupid question - how do you do the quote with the box around it in a reply? You and pimp both did this in your replies below.

Bottom right corner of the post you want to quote is a little button labeled "Quote". ;p

turned the blue knob to the right a few clicks or so and that seemed to do the trick.

it blows cold even when sitting at a light now :D

thanks for the advice.

most excelent dude :)
