I was in autozone today killing some time and was looking at oil filters for my 94 LC. Specifically AC Delco, since I also use this brand in my 89 Supra. I know ppl on here like the OEM ones, but the "good" ones are getting hard to come by if what I have read on here is correct.

Anyway, for my 94 they didn't list a Delco p/n but instead a Motorcraft one (I won't touch that brand) But I also checked the 95, 96, 97, and 98 years. What I found odd was that after 95, they did list an A/C Delco filter PF53. Which happens to be the same size and p/n (small coffee mug size) as my 89 Supra and the v6 4runner I sold.
I'm wondering is this actually correct and does anyone use the PF53, since the other brands they listed refered me to a "large coffee can" sized filter... and is the smaller or larger better? ( I thought I read larger was better for reduced chance of startup knock?)

The seal looks to be the same size on both large and small, its just the large one overhangs the seal more.
The reason I ask, is they are cheaper and easier to get than OEM, and there was also a post on supraforums where several oil filters were cut open and analyzed. Showing that A/C Delco was the better choice over other brands and comparable to OEM. The Delco did leak but it let clean oil to the dirty side compared to Fram that let it leak from dirty - to - clean side.
Thanks for any info,
-Gary

Other way around, the filter on the 80 being mounted horizontally will drain wile the engine is off, larger filter means more air space and longer time to get pressure up and more rattle, on most other vehicles where the filter is vertical a larger filter is better because it has more volume and filtering area with has a set of advantages.

AC Delco's come from many sources most used to come from Champion Labs and were of very good quality, CL makes a lot of oil filters, Mobil 1, K&N, Wal Mart supertech and a bunch of other private labels with slightly differing specs such as media type and area, base plate thickness etc for each brand around a basic common design, Champion labs has now converted many of their brands over to the new cheaper to manufacture "E-core" witch is a downgrade, a filter built more like a Fram. Look in the end if you see a plastic skeleton supporting the media it is an e-core, if it is a perforated metal tube it is the old style. I don’t know if current AC delco’s are e-core’s of if even CL anymore.

I was big on Champion labs/AC delco’s on my Chevy, most Chevy’s have the filter bypass valve in the block, so the filter’s for chevy’s do not have bypass valve in the filter, a unique and nice feature IMO, the valve in the block is much better made than ones in a disposable part like a filter, also with the bypass in the block you are less likely to reintroduce contaminates that the filter had previously separated out. on CL app’s with a bypass in the filter like for Toyota they use a rubber ring that deforms to allow oil to bypass, not near as nice as the overkill metal setup in the now discontinued Toyota 20004’s,

Despite Motorcrafts connection with Ford the filters are just fine,

Wix makes a good filter if you don’t have OEM.

A lot of people are happy with puralator “pure one” also.

Toyota went from the large filter to the small filter in the middle of the 80 production, either filter can be used on any 1FZ and many other land cruisers also.
