Gents, working on a 75' FJ45 long bed right hand drive imported form NZ. I think I have a bad ignition switch. Is there a simply way to bypass the ignition switch and attempt to start the truck? In my simple mind that would tell me if the switch is bad. I've already gone through battery, starter, coil, ignitor.
If your NZ RHD is like a FJ40 here in the US a 75 will have plug under the dash at the end of the column for the ignition switch and a second plug for the turn signals. Ignition will have four wires. Without a wiring diagram I would unplug the four wire plug. Using a meter makes sure one of the pins has power. Then just jump the one with power to the other three to figure out which is one is. One should give power to the coil/igniter. Another power the starter. Last one is acc for things like the radio they can be used while engine is. Jumper the voltage wire to the starter wire the starter should turn. Jump either of the others wires the radio should work. But only one of the other these should give power to the coil. If this checks out putting a jumper between power and the pin that gave power to coil you should be able to touch a power wire and starter wire to get it started. If don't have power to one pin or get power to the coil and starter when jumping pins you still could have a bad ignition switch but other problems as well. The reason I would undo the plug under the dash is because that is the way the ignition switch is sold with those wires you pictured. There is a much easier way to go under the hood and start a FJ40/45. But that is for working on the vehicle or worse stealing it not trouble shooting the ignition switch.
Good procedure for testing. Thank You gents. If I can't get this thing figured out I might have to "hotwire" her as I have to get it moved onto a trailer for shipping. Not sure if we want to post on mud how to hotwire a vehicle so I may just google it. If someone wanted to throw it up I wouldn't be upset.
