Got back from the north coast last night with our limit in tow. Few pics from the weekend.

Apparently it was minus tide so the place was packed with every rock picking freak on the west coast. There were more game wardens than you could shake a stick at and they were writing LOTS of citations. The actually had the HWY 1 abalone check point up all weekend stopping every car.

My friends and myself never check the tides, not a big deal to us.
We actually prefer high tide as you don't have to traverse the slippery rocks as much. Next time I am checking so as to avoid the throngs of fair-weather ab fans.

Lucky bastage..

nice!

we were hangin' out near Tomales bay...
the sheer number of people diggin' for clams was amazing.

If its $100 a lb, what do each of them weigh? I was browsing around seeing you can only take like 3 a day, during certain times of the year...

I'm only getting $70 per LB as is, but I eat a lot of corn. I was thinking about switching my diet.

You are just not marketing it correctly. Corn ads flash.

do you keep the shells?

I do keep them, simply because others like them and I give them away. One of the guys I work with built a small pond out of a bunch of ab shells. Not my cup of tea but it looks pretty cool.

Depends on the size...you get a 1-2 lbs of meat out of each one.
It is very rich and a little goes a long way.

The game warden was telling us and I have read that it goes for $100 per lb or $100 - $150 per whole ab but is illegal to sell in any way shape or form, you cannot even give it to a friend, legally.

You can have 3 in your posession and you can get a total of 24 per season. It requires a special punch card like steelhead or salmon.

Man, that plate is awesome, yum! I can taste it from here.

Did you know about the Surf n Turf tradition where NorCal cruiserheads bring Abalone and Venison (Surf N Turf) to Pismojim?

:)

I will gladly bring some down.

November is the last month of the season and if I can get up there the weekend before, we could be eating them fresh.

If not, a couple of frozen ones will have to do.

Nice. Love abalone. Though sometimes it's like eating a tire.

I can dig it, but you gotta eat them fresh out of the ocean.

If you have to freeze them, they need a little extra attention with the tenderizer.

Best way to deal with a frozen ab is to make chowder out of it, mmm good.

Wow, that looks really good. I have never tried abalone, now I think I will have to
