1992 FJ80, stock 80A alternator. I have the FSM with wiring diagram, but am still confused...

I'm in the process of installing a second battery using a Sure Power isolator.
The stock alternator has three (3) connections. One is the condensor, small 14-16 Gauge wire, One large plug, containing the ignition switch (and batt? lines) and one large connector containing two white lines (approx 6 guage) which is held on to a stud in the alternator by a nut.

Now, the Sure Power (hereinafter "SP") instructions have the battery terminal on the back of the isolator being removed and going to the isolator. My question:

On the 1992 alternator, is the battery line in the large plug, or is it the two white 6G lines on the stud? Looking at the FSM wiring diagram, the Battery line is white.

I don't want to screw up and put the ground line to the isolator, and I'm not sure if the alternator uses the case and mount for a ground...

Anyone (Landpimp?) done this on a 1991/1992?

the large wires that go to the stud/nut are the power wires.

Hey H, since several folks with the crappy 3fe have been asking about dual batteries, please document and take as many pics as you can. Will post the thread into FAQ once you're done. :neverseenanattorneygetdirtybefore: :D

H, do you have a scheme in mind to compensate for the voltage drop across the diodes to the batteries? Will your alternator be wired to sense the actual voltage at one of the batteries or will it be sensing the higher voltage at the "input" side of the isolator? Looks like your isolator has 4 connections? Perhaps Sure power has this problem already sorted out. What connects to each post?

All done! I took some pics of the install and will get 'em downloaded off the camera here in a bit!

Rich,

All I'm running right now off the 2nd battery is the Engel 35 Fridge, so I've used 4GA battery cable from the isolator to the 2nd battery (Sure Power recommended 6GA for the length of cable). Right now, charging seems pretty good at around 14vDC when the engine is running.

Junk, I'll get that write up done here ASAP.
