Recently did a timing belt on my wife's 2006 4Runner (2UZ) and it is the AWD Sport Edition which came factory with the A750F 5 Spd. I had heard somewhere that there was a way to adjust the line pressure or the firmness of the shifts without any modification whatsoever. I made a point to adjust the line pressure dial located just under the transmission pan after the timing belt job was finished.
I can definitely say I notice and improvement in shift quality.
Being that this vehicle has 293,000 miles (any many of which it was run hard and put back wet by previous owner) I figured it couldn't hurt to give it a shot.
The result was less hesitation when shifting, more response when pressing the accelerator, and substantially less "slosh" between gear changes.
I will say I was very concerned that I might experience too much of an aggressive gear change, but I am happy to report that that is most certainly not the case.
I also use Valvoline maxlife full synthetic transmission fluid (changed every 30-45k)
My own results May potentially vary from someone who uses exclusively Toyota fluid.
Regardless, I would say if you are looking for an easy way to tighten up the performance of your transmission, it would be worth a shot (at your own risk)
I believe the 5th Gen 4runners use the exact same transmission and this would also be applicable.
