Hi there,

So I'm digging through the 1994 80-series EWD for the A442F transmission trying to figure out how it works for possible future transplant into my 1997 with the A343F tranny.

Note that the A442F uses a separate transmission ECU, whereas the A343F is sent signals from an integrated ECU. However, the signals and voltages to/from both transmissions match up, with the exception of the #4 solenoid and the ST signal from the ECU to the trans on the A442F (the A343F has 3 solenoids, the A442F has 4).

The EWD provides an adequate description of 3 of the 4 solenoids on the A442F- with shifts controlled as follows:

-Shift to / controlled by:
1st- #1 solenoid
2nd- #1, 2 solenoids
3rd- #2 solenoid
4th- #1, 2 solenoids OFF

- Lockup is controlled by #3 solenoid

- But there seems to be little description of A442F solenoid #4 operation. It connects to the "ST' terminal of the trans ECU, which reads between 0-1.5v "with stop vehicle' (along with the 'S2' and 'SL' terminals of the trans ECU) I assume this to mean when the vehicle is stopped.

- The problem is that there exists no 4th solenoid on the A343F, and I am confused as to what the #4 solenoid does on the A442F and what I can feed it with from the '97 ECU for proper operation.

Anyone with ideas, please chime in.

The 4th solenoid controls line pressure. Here is a description from the AW450 manual which should also apply to the A442F:
