I just got the motor out of my 91 FJ80 (3FE). She has 280K and is getting her first rebuild. The transmission (A440 Mechanical) is working fine but she has high miles and I did have the trans temp light come on once on a long hill while in high gear.

Should I rebuild the transmission? What shop would you recommend for a Toyota transmission?

Thanks Inkpot for the tip of pulling the motor and transmission as a unit. She came right out no trouble.

Doesn't sound like there is any need to touch the transmission. Not a problem area on the 80's that I am aware of.

Would be interested in Murf's take on this. Is they any factory option as replacement on this? The A440F is not the same transmission used on the 93 and later FZJ80. It the same one as the used as on the FJ62. These I don't believe are as bullet proof as the A443F I believe is the one used in the 93+ 80 series.

IMO,
Since youre rebuilding the engine and would most likely keep it for a long time at this point, I feel that now is the time to do it and spend the money on a low mile used trans. Many parts suppliers will give you a 1 yr warranty on used units to give you peace of mind. I think they can be had for around 500-600? To rebuild one would be well more than this between the labor and all the parts. Get one with 120-150k and it will most likely go to 300k+. They are stout units but at almost 300K, only the crystal ball can tell you how much longer its going to hold up - also consider that the newly rebuilt engine will have considerably more hp/torque (relatively speaking) that might add new stresses to the old trans.

Not sure if the 62 and 80 used the same A440F transmission. I know heat has been a problem in the 62 series. Had my 62 for twenty-one years and the temperature light has only been on once during that time. Slowed down and it went off. The cruiser has just over 120K miles on it and now lives in the cooler high country. I also have low mile replacement I purchased Tim Hill eighteen years ago. So hopefully I wouldn't run in to problems. Finding a local one with low miles might be worth looking into. A advantage of the 80 series is the transfer case can be removed with out tearing it apart. If you can't find one it will at least be easier to pull than the 62 series. Guessing unless you have all the right tools handling the two separately would be easier.

Murf how would CBT handle a FJ62/FJ80 with a bad transmission? I gather Toyota has no replacement option?
