Here are some pictures of a friend's misadventures on the backway to Crown King. I wasn't with them, but received a phone call asking for a tow.

Friend 1 was trying to winch Friend 2 up the hill that you see the Silverado (Friend 2) sitting at the bottom of. Friend 1 had his vehicle in park, with the parking brake on, the tires chocked with rocks but did not have his truck anchored to anything. The parking pawl snapped and Friend 1's Jeep proceeded down the hill. Friend 1 had to jump out of the way.

The huge dent in Friend 2's hood is from Friend 1's passenger side front tire rolling over the top of it.

Friend 1's Cherokee then went end over end down the hill you sitting it at the bottom of. It rolled at least twice lengthwise. Interestingly he was able to drive back up to the trail from its resting spot.

The Silverado has several thousand dollars worth of damage (bumper cover, core/radiator support, passenger front fender, hood, radiator). The Cherokee is obviously a total loss.

No one was hurt - Friend 1 was out of the vehicle, Friend 2 was in the Driver's seat of the pickup.

I took my 80 out and helped tow them back. I found Friend 2 (Silverado) towing Friend 1 very slowly back down the mountain. They were using river water in the Silverado's leaking radiator to keep the truck cool. The Silverado was able to get out under his own power (with the help of additional water I carried with me). I towed the Jeep, which was stuck in 4Low, all the way back to Carefree Highway.

Some kind people stopped and help them recover both vehicles.

The point of all of this is don't be lazy like my friend was! Stay safe.

thats one crazy accident, good to hear no one was hurt. I know they have been grading the hell out of the road, but not a place for a Silverado in the 1st place, but thats besides the point.

Evidently the road is very washed out in the higher elevations, past where the accident happened. I haven't been up very far recently. The rumor was a 12' section of road gone? Who knows if that is true.

How about never winch without a foot on the brake? The parking pawl isn't meant for that kind of force. Neither is the e-brake. Glad to see no one got hurt.

My buddy learned that the hard way today.

I'm no expert, but I wouldn't sit inside a vehicle that is winching/being winched. Personally I would have tried to anchor it to something. Snapped winch lines are scary.

I saw some pictures of the washed out area somewhere on this forum or FJ Cruiser Forum not sure which one. Believe it! It looks 12' to 20' wide and maybe 8' deep.

wow - good point to remind everyone. Glad no one got hurt.

Wow glad everyone came out ok, vehicles can be replaced. Like others I have heard the forest service has been going nuts opening up that backroute. should have just left it like it was.

Foot on the brake, hood open as protection from any flying objects...
.......and a piece of heavy material (canvas/carpet) drapped on the winchline (if steel) to reduce snap-back.

Wow amazing no one was hurt... hard to believe he was able to drive that cherokee after that!

The area doesn't look that rough. But then it never does in pics. The jeep rolled didn't it? That tends to suggest that the area was rougher than it looks.
It is never wise to use a winch without the brakes locked, at least. If there is any risk, it is better to tie the winching truck to something.
I've been accused of not using my LC, but I have used my winch several times. I always either use the brakes and/or tie the truck to something solid before winching another truck out of a hole. I don't put myself at risk to save another guy who is already there.
