Hi all.
Can anyone with an automatic BJ74 shed some light on how to remove the plastic cover surrounding the shift lever? I've removed the 2 screws on the side but am unable to lift it off. There seems to be some kind of clip inside but I've had no luck figuring it out. No other screws or fasteners are visible.

Thanks in advance

Screws under cupholder felt and felt under parking brake

Ya, once these two are removed you can lift her off. Just take off the gear shift lever knob first and all comes off easily. I am looking for the one for the manual transmission if you know of some on who has it.

Thanks, but I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing.
This is the grey plastic trim surrounding the Auto shift lever - I would like to replace the burnt-out indicator bulb.
I don't have cupholders (sadly), and it's in no way connected to the parking brake.

Does the console look like this?

I believe we are talking about the same thing, if you have a grey console that surrounds your gear selector and the transfer stick pictured above. There are screws under the felts of the two positions mentioned.

Here is a picture of my console. There is one screw on each side near the back - nothing at the front. The back will lift up but seems to be held near the front by some sort of hidden fastener. Pulling any harder will risk breaking the plastic. That might give me the opportunity to replace it with one of those consoles with cupholders but I hate being outwitted by inanimate objects!

Thanks again for the assistance.

Never saw one like that, but you are right, different beast for sure. I see a screw on one side as you say, probably another in same position on other side. Might be one on other side hidden behind transfer case shifter boot.

Sorry can't help more!

If the truck is a true 24V then all bulbs will be as well. Some JDMs are 24V start and the rest is 12V...suspect these are ones made for northern climates for ease of starting in the cold. Also, for NATO compliance.

I'm assuming there is a bulb in there - can't remember if it ever lit up! I've been on a bit of a mission to get all the burnt bulbs replaced as it was getting hard to see.

Yes, it will be 24v - probably the same as the dash bulbs (Toyota pn 90339-04014).

Phil, if you haven't tried already, see if removing the two screws will allow you to lift off the cover. If it works, let me know what you find please. Sometimes it is just really stubborn trim clips (and sometimes it's that one hidden fastener that breaks off...)

Cheers

I'm guessing there's a plastic hook at the front. Remove the two rear screws and try bumping the housing forward to unhook (The rear may have to be raised a bit).

Not sure if this is the same console, you might want to find the exact year/model to match yours...

It seems to show a screw at the front, possibly under a removable hole cover at the front of the console, maybe the piece behind the indicator lights?

Hey Simon - you're the man!
I tried the TOYODIY route but us North American are blocked out of the diagrams now.
The good news: gently pry up the list of instructions in front of the warning lights and remove the two screws. Easy.
The bad news: No bulb to illuminate the gear selector!

At least now we know how to replace the warning bulbs...

Cheers

Came across this thread as I also missed finding those 2 other screws under the cover plate... Thanks!

Also, there actually is a bulb in there to illuminate the gear selection area. You have to not only remove the main trans console/cover, but then also disassemble the gear selection cover area as well, in order to get to it. At least on mine it's there anyway...it's an 1989 BJ74 JDM with the auto.

Here's a pic. You can see the bulb with the green "condom" over it. (Not sure if the green condom on there is standard or not...I've found those green condoms on all my interior and dash lights, which I know is not standard).

Ferg, thanks for resurrecting this thread. I will go looking for that bulb. I think the green condoms are stock - I've pulled mine off in a quest for brightness. I can actually see the instruments with them off.
